Rose Azzu's

Il gruppo di Ravelry KAL from Italy, aveva organizzato per il mese di Maggio, il KAL incentrato su uno dei tanti scialli di Emma Fassio, Celebrating Azzu’s Shawl. Infatti, in occasione del 1000 progetto eseguito seguendo le istruzioni di Azzu's Shawl, Emma ha pensato di creare un’alternativa e di celebrare questo suo fantastico traguardo: è così che è nato Celebrating Azzu’s Shawl, una variante all’originale. 

The Ravelry group’s KAL from Italy organized, for the month of May, a KAL to knit one of the many Emma Fassio’s shawls, Celebrating Azzu’s Shawl. In fact, she thought to celebrate the 1000th project knitted following her instruction for Azzu’s, and created an alternative to the original, Celebrating Azzu’s Shawl, to remember this important finishing line of hers.

Io mi sono unita all’ultimo minuto al KAL e ho pensato di sfruttare i due gomitoli di Fonty Majorque rimasti dal Vitamin D. Siccome avevo a disposizione un metraggio inferiore di filato rispetto a quello suggerito dal modello, il mio scialle è venuto leggermente più piccolo, ma comunque carino! Credo che sia perfetto, grazie al suo tenue e neutro colore, per le brezze estive . . . Che ne dite?

I joined the KAL just at the end and I used two balls of Fonty Majorque, leftovers from Vitamin D. As I had an inferior quantity of yarn of what the pattern said, my shawl is a little smaller, but still very cute! I think it is perfect, because of its light and neutral color, for the summer breeze . . . What do you think?

Sfumature | Shades

Ecco qua finita la mini cappa che ho iniziato il 19 Novembre al Workshop organizzato a Carate Brinza da Luisa.

Here is the mini cape I begun during the workshop organized by Luisa in Carate Brianza on the 19th of November.

Il pattern è lo "Sfumature" di Emma e come al solito ho apportato alcune modifiche, seppur lievi. Innanzitutto ho seminato qua e là qualche aumento in più perché mi sembrava che la cappa risultasse essere un pochino troppo stretta. Poi, sempre per lo stesso motivo, ho spostato più in alto l’apertura centrale tra le trecce, anticipandola di una ventina di ferri circa e aggiungendo una serie di bottoncini per un’eventuale chiusura. Il risultato finale è una calda e colorata nuvola di morbidezza e non vedo l’ora di sfoggiarla sui miei cappotti!

The pattern is "Shades" by Emma and, as usual, I made some little changes. First I put here and there few more increases as it seemed that the cape was going to be a little too tight. Then, for the same reason, I moved further up the central opening between the cables, anticipating it of about twenty rows and adding a set of buttons for a possible closing. The result is a warm and colorful cloud of softness which I cannot wait to show off over my coats! =)

Il filato è la Malagrigo Worsted, un 100% merino a capo singolo filato a mano (100 gr per 192 m circa). Come riportato sulla fascetta, ho ottenuto circa 10 maglie in 10 cm usando ferri con punte da 5,5 mm. Scivola bene sui ferri, ma forse è meglio lavorarlo con quelli in alluminio per avere una scorrevolezza ottimale.

Al tatto la matassa è morbidissima e corposa, come del resto il lavoro che se ne ottiene. Lo trovo adattissimo per lavori con trecce, visto che la consistenza del filato mette perfettamente in rilievo e quindi in risalto questo tipo di lavorazione, sottolineando intrecci e curve senza distorcerle. Ovviamente, essendo abbastanza ingombrante, tende a non drappeggiare troppo, regalando piuttosto un effetto avvolgente e caldo, adattissimo per la realizzazione di capi invernali come maglioni, colli e sciarpe.

La cartella colori mette di fronte a dure scelte tanto è ampia. Si divide in tre categorie: true solids, con 12 colori ottenuti tingendo la lana prima della lavorazione; kettle dyed solids, più di 70 colori che riescono a coprire tutte le gradazioni, caratterizzati da lievi sfumature (tinti dopo la filatura); e infine i variegati, con circa 45 opzioni. Quello che ho usato per il mio lavoro rientra in quest’ultima categoria: Azalea, un mix di fucsia, viola e blu davvero energizzante e allo stesso tempo caldo. Perfetta scelta per l’inverno. Le lane o matasse sono tutte tinte a mano in piccoli bagni e viene raccomandato il lavaggio a mano e l’asciugatura in piano.

Io mi sono innamorata della Malabrigo Worsted e non posso che consigliarvi di provarla, anche perché il prezzo è davvero eccezionale: circa €10 a matassa! 

The yarn I used is Malagrigo Worsted, a 100% merino single ply handspun (100 g, 192 m). As reported on the label, I got about 10 stitches over 10 cm using 5.5 mm needles. It slides quite well on the needles but maybe it is better to work it with aluminum ones to obtain a very good sliding.

Skeins are soft and dense to the touch, like the knitting that you obtain. I highly recommend Malabrigo Worsted for cables projects, because the texture of the yarn highlights and emphasizing very well twists and curves without distorting them. Of course, being a quite bulky yarn, tends not to drape so easily, giving rather a wrap-around and warm effect, resulting then very suitable for the realization of winter clothes like sweaters, collars and scarves.

The color chart face you in front of tough choices as it is very large. It is divided into three categories: true solids, with 12 colors obtained dyeing the wool before processing it; kettle dyed solids, more than 70 colors that cover all nuances, characterized by subtle shades (dyed after spinning), and finally the variegated, with about 45 options. What I used for my work falls into the last category: Azalea, a mix of fuchsia, purple and blue at the same time very energizing and warm. Perfect choice for the winter. Wool or skeins are all hand-dyed in small batches and it is recommended hand washing and drying them flat.

I fell in love with Malabrigo Worsted and I can only advise you to try it, because the price is exceptional: about € 10 per skein! 

La Donna Misteriosa | The Mysterious Woman

E’ già qualche giorno che ho finito e bloccato la Donna Misteriosa, lo scialle protagonista del Mystery KAL organizzato dal gruppo Kal from Italy su Ravelry.

It is few days that I've already finished and blocked the Mysterious Woman, the shawl protagonist of the Mystery KAL organized by the group Kal from Italy on Ravelry.

Come vi ho anticipato in un precedente post, per questo progetto ho usato la bellissima Malabrigo Sock nel mio colore preferito: il rosso Ravelry. Questo filato (110 gr = 402 m), composto da 100 % merino superwash 3 ply, è adattissimo per sferruzzare scialli, sciarpe e colli data la sua morbidezza e regolarità che permette di ottenere una buona definizione dei punti, soprattutto nei motivi effetto pizzo. La lavorazione è piacevole, anche se forse è meglio lavorarlo con ferri in legno, acrilico o bambù (io ho usato quelli in alluminio e devo dire che i punti scivolavano un po’ troppo) e il lavoro finito cade che è una bellezza. La Malabrigo Sock è pure lavabile in lavatrice con cicli delicati e acqua fredda, anche se io preferisco sempre lavare i miei capi a mano. E che dire dei colori? Le tinte unite sono tutte abbastanza forti e vivaci, bellissime, caratterizzate da sottili sfumature (i filati Malabrigo sono infatti tinti a mano) che rendono leggermente movimentato il lavoro, mentre le tonalità nei multicolori sono accostate con sapienza a dare bellissimi effetti variegati. Un filato quindi con un ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo, circa 15/16 euro a matassa. Io l’ho acquistato da Loop a Londra, ma lo potete trovare anche in Italia da Unfilodi.

As I mentioned in a previous post, for this project I used the beautiful Malabrigo Sock in my favorite color: Ravelry Red. This yarn (110 g = 402 m), made of 100% superwash merino 3 ply, is very suitable for shawls, scarves and cowls because of its softness and regularity which allows a good stitch definition, especially in lacy patterns. The knitting is pleasant, though perhaps it is better to work it with wood, acrylic or bamboo needles (I used aluminum ones and I must say that the stitches slipped a bit too much) and the finished work drapes that is a beauty. Malabrigo Sock is also machine washable with delicate cycles and cold water, even though I always prefer to wash my garments by hand. And what about the colors? Solid colors are all pretty bright and vibrant, beautiful, characterized by subtle shades (Malabrigo yarns are hand dyed) that make the project a little more lively, while in multicolored ones hues are juxtaposed with knowledge to give beautiful variegated effects. So I would say this is a yarn with excellent value for money, about 15/16 euros per skein. I bought it from Loopin London, but can also be found in Italy at Unfilodi.

E ora, il Mystery KAL. E’ stata la mia prima volta e mi sono divertita nel leggere e vedere i progressi delle altre che come me vi hanno partecipato e credo che se ne avrò l’occasione vi prenderò parte nuovamente. Il modello di Emma è come al solito di alto impatto visivo, anche se forse stavolta il risultato mi ha soddisfatto un pochino meno delle altre volte. La colpa è della forma che è perfetta per uno scialle vero e proprio, un po’ meno per uno scialle da portare a mo’ di sciarpa come piace tanto a me. Poi, visto che al momento di chiudere le maglie mi erano avanzati almeno 25 gr di filato (sono ossessionata dai bei filati e non mi piace avere avanzi che poi non posso utilizzare per qualcos’altro perché non sufficienti!) ho deciso di proseguire il lavoro improvvisando qualche altro ferro. Lo scialle finito è comunque perfetto e credo che diventerà un bellissimo regalo di Natale!

And now, something about the Mystery KAL. It has been my first time and I enjoyed reading and seeing the progress of the others whom like me have participated, and I think that if I get the chance, I will do it again. Emma’s pattern is, as usual, of high visual impact, though perhaps this time the result satisfied me a little less. The problem is the shape which is perfect for a shawl, a little less for a shawl to wear like a scarf as I like to wear mine. Then, as when I arrived to bind off I had at least 25 grams of leftover yarn (I'm obsessed with beautiful yarns and I do not like to have leftovers that I cannot then use for something else because they are not enough!) I decided to continue knitting improvising some other rows. The finished shawl is anyway perfect and I think it will become a wonderful Christmas present!

 

Paradiso Lanoso | Wolly Paradise

Ieri sono andata a Carate Brianza per partecipare ad uno dei tanti Workshops organizzati da Lulù presso il suo negozio Unfilodi. Una splendida giornata.

Questi workshops hanno una cadenza mensile, ma per me, che abito non proprio dietro l’angolo e che sono per buona parte dell’anno in terre straniere e spesso fuori mano, è diventato un appuntamento annuale che si ripete ormai da tre anni.

Ricordo benissimo la prima volta che ho suonato il campanello al cancello di ferro di Unfilodi: sembravo una bambina il primo giorno di scuola, piena di curiosità nel vedere cosa c’era dentro quelle quattro mura e poter finalmente conoscere le mie nuove compagne. E l’attesa non mi ha delusa perché le persone che lavorano con Luisa sono davvero speciali e con il passare del tempo (e degli ordini on line!) sono diventate delle amiche. Per non parlare poi di tutte le altre che come me frequentano i corsi: alcune ormai le conosco abbastanza bene, ma non mancano mai dei volti nuovi e così è facile stringere nuove amicizie. Insomma, adoro quel Paradiso Lanoso e mi faccio più che volentieri tutti quei km ogni volta che posso. 

Il workshop di ieri era tenuto da Emma Fassio e incentrato sulla lavorazione di una piccola cappa e di un cappellino arricchiti da una decorazione a trecce, realizzabili con filati worsted. Io mi sono lanciata sulla Malabrigo in una favolosa serie di sfumature che dal fucsia virano al viola e al blu. Però non sono riuscita a stare a sedere più di un paio d’ore perché poi, come al solito, la voglia di toccare e acquistare nuovi filati ha prevalso sulla realizzazione del pattern in corso d’opera. Ero partita con l’idea di non comprare niente che non fosse strettamente necessario, ma alla fine sono uscita da Unfilodi con un sacchettone pieno di belle mattasse colorate!

Un grazie a Lulù che ogni volta dimostra di essere una perfetta padrona di casa, ad Emma e ai suoi sempre favolosi lavori, allo staff di Unfilodi sempre paziente ed efficiente, e a tutte le altre ragazze per condividere con me una forte passione per la maglia e per rendere ancora più speciali e divertenti queste giornate.

"Sfumature" by Emma Fassio in progress

Yesterday I went to Carate Brianza to attend one of the many workshops organized by Lulu at her shop Unfilodi. A wonderful day.

These workshops have a monthly basis, but for me that I live not around the corner and for a big period of the year in foreign and often faraway lands, it has become an annual event that takes place since three years ago.

I remember very well the first time I rang the bell at the iron gate of Unfilodi: I was looking like a little girl on her first day of school, full of curiosity to see what was inside those four walls and to finally meet new classmates. And the await didn’t disappoint me because all the people who work with Luisa are very special and with the passage of time (and online orders!) have become friends. Not to mention all the others who, like me, attend the courses: I already know well enough some of them, but there are always new faces there and so it is easy to make new friends. In short, I love that Woolly Paradise and I am more than willing to drive for all those km whenever I can.

The workshop of yesterday was held by Emma Fassio and focused on the realization of a small cape and a hat embellished with decorative cables to knit with worsted yarns. I launched myself on the awesome Malabrigo in a fabulous range of shades that veer from fuchsia to purple and blue. But I could not sit more than a couple of hours because then, as usual, the desire to touch and buy new yarns has prevailed on the realization of the work in progress. I was playing with the idea of buying anything but just some strictly necessary stuff, but I ended going out of Unfilodi with a big bag full of beautiful colored skeins!

Thanks to Lulu that every time proves to be a perfect landlady, to Emma and her always fabulous projects, to the staff of Unfilodi always very patient and efficient, and to all the other girls who share with me a strong passion for knitting making these days even more special and funny.
