Wollmeise!

Oggi ho ricevuto un pacchetto dalla Germania. 

Sul forum dedicato al nuovo Mystery KAL di Stephen West è stata aperta una discussione sui filati e colori che verranno usati da coloro che hanno deciso di partecipare a questa attraente sfida. Molti, me compresa, hanno per la testa troppe accoppiate di colori possibili e così si finisce per chiedere consiglio e scambiarsi pareri. Oppure filati. E’ così che sono venuta in possesso di questa favolosa matassina di Wollmeise, la prima per me, arrotolata stretta stretta su se stessa, ma ancora capace di mostrare le sue sfumature in tutta la loro bellezza e vivacità. La adoro. Un immenso grazie a Sandra che ha deciso che questi colori non sono fatti a posta per lei e che così mi ha ceduto questo piccolo tesoro.

 

L’unica pecca, si è per me aperto un nuovo Vaso di Pandora: è difficile resistere a comprare altra Wollmeise quando hai tra le mani della lana con dei colori così belli! Ne voglio sicuramente di più!

Today I got a parcel from Germany.

On the forum dedicate to the new Stephen West’s Mystery KAL, there is a long discussion about the yarns and colors that those who have decided to take part in this attractive challenge are going to use. Many, myself as well, have too many couple of colors in their mind so it is normal asking for help in the choice and exchange opinions. Or yarns. This is how I got possession of this fabulous skein of Wollmeise, my first one, all tight rolled up on itself, but still able to show her shades in all their beauty and brightness. I love it. A huge thank you to Sandra whom has decided that those colors don’t suit her and so sent me this little treasure.

The only fault, a new Vase of Pandora has been opened in front of me: it is very hard to resist in buying more Wollmeise when you can touch some wool with those wonderful colors! I want more!

Zuzu's # 2

Qui a Mackay, in Queensland, tira spesso un vento leggero e fresco, soprattutto lungo la costa, quindi ho ben pensato di farmi una versione più estiva del favoloso Zuzu’s Petals, il collo sciallato di Carina Spencer per proteggere il mio collo che  volentieri si blocca e indolenzisce.

Here in Mackay, Queensland, usually a light and fresh wind blows, above all along the coast, so I thought to knit a summer version of the fabulous Zuzu’s Petals, the shawl-cowl by Carina Spencer, to protect my neck that frequently gets blocked and sore.

Invece della Malabrigo Worsted, questa volta ho usato i due gomitoli e mezzo di Rosarios4 WoolyBoo che mi sono avanzati dal Kara e questo filato, composto da cotone, bambù e lana, si è rivelato perfetto: il mio nuovo Zuzu’s è morbidissimo e protegge senza però essere troppo pesante e soffocante. Lo adoro!

Instead of the Malabrigo Worsted, this time I used some Rosarios4 WoolyBoo leftovers from Kara cardigan and this yarn, with its mix of cotton, bamboo and wool, reveals itself perfectly for this project: my new Zuzu’s is very soft and protects although without being too heavy and warm. I love it!

Una delle mie ultime fisse riguarda i modelli pubblicati da Quince & Co. Ho già realizzato le meravigliose riedizioni di due dei modelli di Hannah Fettig, Wispy e Featherwiegh Cardirgan (entrambi pubblicati nel libro Knitbot Essential), ma non ho saputo resistere alla tentazione di avviare un altro cardigan stupendo: Kara di Cecily G McDonald. Appena l’ho visto ho deciso che, prima o poi, lo avrei realizzato. Il momento è arrivato quando ho comprato la Rosarios4 WoolyBoo in una favolosa tenuissima sfumatura di rosa pesca che si addice perfettamente all’eleganza dell’effetto pizzo del modello.

One of my last obsession is about the patterns published by Quince & Co. I have already knitted the amazing re-editions of two of Hannah Fettig’s patterns, Wispy and Featherweight Cardigan (both of them published in the ebook Knitbot Essential), but I couldn’t resist the temptation of casting on another wonderful cardigan: Kara by Cecily G McDonald. As soon as I have seen it I decided that, now or then, I would have knitted it. The moment has arrived when I bought Rosarios4 WoolyBoo in a fabulous light peach pink shade which matches perfectly the elegance of the pattern’s lace motif.

Ovviamente, avendo a disposizione un filato totalmente diverso da quello indicato nelle istruzioni, ho dovuto apportare qualche modifica visto che, anche se ho usato lo stesso n. di ferri (4 mm), la mia tensione era completamente diversa.

Obviously, because I have used a totally different yarn from the one suggested by the instructions, I had to do some modifications as, even if I have used the same needles size (4 mm), my gauge was completely off.

Ecco qua le mie modifiche:

Per il dietro del lavoro ho avviato solamente 76 maglie (1 m per la cucitura, 8 ripetizioni + 2 m, 1 altra m per l’altra cucitura) ed ho eseguito un totale di 5 ripetizioni in verticale.

Per le maniche ho avviato ad ambo i lati 45 maglie ed eseguito un totale di 5 ripetizioni in verticale per avere una circonferenza manica leggermente più agiata.

Una volta chiuse le maglie per lo scollo, mi sono rimaste 20 maglie per ciascuna delle due parti del davanti.

Il mio Kara mi piace tantissimo e non vedo l’ora di indossarlo!

Here are my mods:

For the back I CO just 76 stitches (1 st for the sewing, 8 repeats + 2 sts, 1 st for the other sewing) and I have done a total of 5 repeats in vertical.

For the sleeves, I CO 45 stitches and I have done 5 repeats in vertical in order to have a sleeve circumference slightly more comfortable.

Once the neck stitches were bounded off, I had 20 stitches left for each one of the front sections.

I am really pleased with my Kara and I can’t wait to wear it!

Oggi ho passato la giornata a zonzo per Sydney e quindi ho colto l’occasione per andarmi a vedere Wool Modern, una mostra concepita dal Principe del Galles per “ricordare al mondo che la lana è la fibra preferita dai migliori e più famosi designers e decoratori e per stimolare la prossima generazione di talenti ad utilizzare la lana nei loro lavori”.

Coral(ine)

Ce l’ho fatta: sono riuscita a finire il mio Coraline! Ci ho messo un po’ di tempo, ma i ferri da 3 mm che ho dovuto usare per ottenere una tensione simile a quella consigliata non mi hanno certo aiutata. Ed ecco qua il risultato.

Come al solito ho apportato qualche piccola modifica:
-innanzitutto ho eseguito il bordo del busto e delle maniche a coste 1/1, omettendo quindi l’orlo e lo sbuffo dei polsini;
-invece del classico bordo i-cord ho pensato di sfruttare quello usato per il Goodale (sul diritto del lavoro: 1d, p1r, 1d – sul rovescio: p1r, 1d, p1r);
-per quanto riguarda le maniche, ho montato meno maglie ed eseguito una serie di aumenti per arrivare al giromanica con lo stesso numero di maglie stabilito dallo istruzioni (62 m iniziali + 2 m ogni 19esimo giro x 5).

E’ la prima volta che mi cimento con lo smoking e avevo paura che la lavorazione venisse troppo stretta, invece con il bloccaggio tutto è andato al suo posto e sono molto soddisfatta del risultato. Ho trovato geniale il metodo per la realizzazione delle asole, un sistema nuovo per me ma che, se ricordo bene, la mia mamma di solito usava nei vestitini delle mie sorelle e miei. L’unica cosa che mi lascia un po’ perplessa è il bordo con l’icord che sembra arrotolarsi verso l’interno, ma non ho intenzione di rimettere mano a questo lungo lavoro e sono sicura che un colpo di ferro lo aiuterà a stare al suo posto!

Pollice su per Ysolda!

I did it: I finally finished my Coraline! I have needed time, but the 3 mm needles that I had to use to obtain a similar gauge to the one recommended by the pattern didn’t help me at all.

As usual I did some modifications:
-first of all, I knitted the edges of the body and sleeves in 1/1 ribbing, omitting the folded hem and the puff sleeves;
-instead of the classic i-cord edging I preferred the one used in Goodale (RS: k1, s1p, k1 – WS: s1p, 1k, s1p);
-for the sleeves I casted on a smaller number of stitches and knitted few increases to arrive at the underarms with the same number of stitches of the pattern (CO 62 sts + 2 incr every 19th row x 5).

It is the first time I knit smocking stitch and I was worried that the garment would be not elastic, but with the blocking everything went all right and I’m very pleased with the result. I found genial the technique to create button loops, a new one for me but, if I well remember, my mum used to use for my sisters and my clothes. The only thing I don’t like so much is the i-cord edging that looks rolling on itself, but I don’t want to change anything and I’m sure some ironing will help it to stay on place!

Non ho fatto in tempo a finire il mio Goodale (è ufficialmente entrato a pieno titolo nella mia top ten list di pattern preferiti!) che ho già iniziato un nuovo lavoro con lo stesso filato: la meravigliosa Silky Wool di Elsebeth Lavold, stavolta in una bellissima tonalità di rosso corallo. Non ho resistito!

Il modello che ho scelto è uno dei più gettonati su Ravelry: il Coraline di Ysolda Teague. Ho fatto diverse prove, ma non sono riuscita ad ottenere la tensione suggerita sulle istruzioni (24 maglie in 10 cm) e così ho avviato il numero di maglie indicate per la taglia 34” in modo da avere una 38”, spero funzioni. Ho anche già apportato la prima modifica: il bordo non mi convinceva e così lo sto facendo a coste 1/1 e credo che ripeterò anche per le maniche.

Ora non mi resta che armarmi di tanto pazienza e sferruzzare a maglia rasata diritta per circa 40 cm, un lavoro abbastanza noioso, ma spero che mi aiuti a passare il tempo nei prossimi giorni in previsione dei circa 4.500 km da percorrere in macchina per raggiungere Adelaide. Tifate per me!

As I cast off my Goodale, which is officially in my top ten list of favorite patterns, I began a new project using the same yarn: the wonderful Silky Wool by Elsebeth Lavold, this time in a lovely red coral shade. I couldn’t resist!

The pattern I choose is one of the most famous on Ravelry: Coraline by Ysolda Teague. I did several swatches, but I couldn’t obtain the gauge suggested in the instructions (24 sts in 10 cm) so I cast on the number of stitches for the size 34” to obtain a 38”, I hope it is gonna work! I did the first modification too: I didn’t like the edge so I knit few rows in 1/1 rib pattern and I think I’ll knit the same in the sleeves.

Now I just have to knit in stockinette stitch for about 40 cm, a boring job but I hope it will help me to spend the time in the next few days as my boyfriend and I have to drive for 4.500 km to get to Adelaide. Cheer for me!

Oranje

Come preannunciato da Pantone, il 2012 è l'anno dell'arancione, ma a Knitty lo sapevano già e... voilà! Ecco qui il mio nuovo amore: Oranje di WeaverKnits, un fantastico cardigan eseguito con la tecnica del fair isle ed usando la bellissima - lo so anche se non l'ho ancora mai usata! - Sanguine Gryphon Bugga Bugga!

Ora devo solo fare un (altro) po' di yarn shopping e sono pronta per questa impresa! Non credo di riuscire a reperire il filato sopra citato tanto facilmente, e mi sto quindi ingegnando per trovare un'adeguata e altrettanto bella alterantiva, magari potrei sfruttare la Silky Wool della Elsebeth che dovrebbe arrivarmi per posta a breve, oppure una Malabrigo o MadTosh sock...vedremo!

This is my new love: Oranje by WeaverKnits, a fabulous fair isle cardigan knit using the wonderful - I know it even if I've never used it before! - Sanguine Gryphon Bugga Bugga!

Now I've to do some (more) yarn shopping and then I'm ready for this project!

I don't think I can find the yarn above so easily, so I'm doing my best to find an adequate and just as beautiful alternative, maybe I could use Elsebeth' Silky Wool which should arrive soon by mail, or Malabrigo or MadTosh sock ... we'll see!
