Oblivious

Prima ho provato con Ambrosia e quando sono arrivata a metà lavoro l’ho disfatto.

Poi ho tentato con Acorns, l’ho finito e addirittura bloccato, ma il risultato non mi soddisfaceva affatto e quindi l’ho disfatto.

Infine ho improvvisato: ho realizzato un pull top-down, senza pretese, a maglia rasata diritta, con collo “alto” e bordi a coste adornati con dei bottoni dello stesso colore del filato. Il tutto in una taglia più piccola della mia, così quando ho bloccato il capo, con l’allungamento e allargamento proprio del filato, ho finalmente ottenuto qualcosa di decente! 

Amo la consistenza del Rosarios4 Biobamboo, la sua lucentezza e morbidezza, ma devo ammettere che trovare un modello che ne facesse risaltare queste sue caratteristiche è stato difficile. Infatti questo filato è assai pesante ed ha l’indesiderata tendenza a deformarsi ed allungarsi spropositatamente una volta che il capo è lavato e bloccato. E’ un peccato perché il Biobamboo è davvero unico: è così delicato e soffice che si può portare tranquillamente a pelle, perfetto quindi anche per capi per bambini, e i colori sono semplicemente adorabili, ma si sforma davvero troppo facilmente e non so se vale la pena perderci tutto il tempo che ho perso io per realizzare solo una maglia. In compenso rimane la soddisfazione di aver vinto la battaglia!

 

First I tried wit Ambrosia and when I’ve arrived half way, I unravelled it.

Then I tried with Acorns, I finished it and I even blocked it, but the results was unsatisfactory and I unravelled it too.

Finally I improvised: I made a pull top-down, simple, in stockinette stitch, with rolled neck and ribbed edges adorned with some buttons in the same color of the yarn. Everything one size smaller than mine so when I blocked the garment, with the widening and the stretching typical of the yarn, I obtained something decent!

I love the texture of Rosarios4 Biobamboo, its brilliance and softness, but I’ve to admit that find a pattern able to let stand out these characteristics has been very hard. In fact this yarn is really heavy and has the unwantend tendency to lose shape and stretch out a lot once the item has been washed and blocked. It is a pity as Biobamboo is really unique: it is so soft and delicate that you can wear it next to skin and use it even for baby stuff, and the colors are simply adorable, but stretches out too easily and I don’t know if it is worth all that time to realize just a pullover. On the other hand there is the satisfaction of having won the battle!

Premessa.

Mia sorella, la Fede, mi aveva affidato un suo lavoro a metà perché lo finissi: un pull traforato a maniche corte proveniente da una delle raccolte della Phildar. Era carino, ma era fatto a pezzi e ora che ho familiarizzato con i circolari ed i lavori senza cuciture, non me la sono sentita di proseguirlo e . . . l’ho disfatto! Avevo a disposizione 8 gomitoli da 50 gr per un totale di 1000 m e così mi sono messa alla ricerca di qualcosa di carino, giovanile, portabile ma d’effetto e ho trovato questo . . .

Preface.

My sister Fede gave me one of her projects so I could finish it: a lacy short sleeves pull from one of the Phildar collections. It was very cute, but knitted in pieces and now that I have familiarized myself with circular needles and seamless garments, I couldn’t finish it and . . . I frogged it! I had 8 balls of 50 g for a total of 1000 m so I start looking for something nice, portable but charming and I found this . . .

Il Modello.

Vitamin D di Heidi Kirrmaier. Un pattern che mi ha colpito per la sua morbida linearità e per la sua semplice eleganza. L’ho subito visualizzato indosso a mia sorella, camminando per il Marais sulla via del lavoro, o a fare shopping con le sue amiche super trendy in uno dei mille centri commerciali di Parigi. E così l’ho iniziato e non potevo fare scelta migliore: il pattern è chiarissimo e anche se la serie di ferri accorciati che danno la forma al corpo può sembrare difficile, è scritta alla perfezione e tutto non può che filare liscio come l’olio. La sequenza di gettati danno poi quel semplice dettaglio in più che rendono ancor più speciale il modello. Da rifare.

The Pattern.

Vitamin D by Heidi Kirrmaier. A pattern that hooked me for its soft linearity and simple elegance. I immediately visualized my sister walking along the Marais on her way to work or shopping with her trendy friends in one of the many malls in Paris. So I casted it on and I couldn’t make a better choice: the pattern is super clear and the series of short rows that shapes the body and can appear difficult, it is very well written and everything runs to perfection. Finally the sequence of yarns over add a simple yet special detail to this great pattern. To knit it again!

Il Filato.

Majorque della Fonty, un misto 60 % cotone e 40 % lino che mi è piaciuto tantissimo. Ultimamente sono presa da filati sottili, da lavorare con ferri da 3 o 3,5 mm, e piacciono in particolare quelli in cotone, non lucidi e un po’ rustici, e questo rientra nell’elenco. Non è semplice da lavorare perché proprio a causa della finezza, le irregolarità di tensione risaltano ancora di più, ma una volta che si conosce l’ostacolo non resta che superarlo, no? Insomma, filato perfetto per cardigan e pull leggeri, estivi e svolazzanti, soprattutto in questa bellissima tenue sfumatura di rosa antico!

The Yarn.

I liked very much Majorque by Fonty, 60% cotton and 40% linen. Lately I use a lot very thin yarns, to knit with 3 or 3,5 mm needles, and I really like those in cotton, not shiny at all and a little rustic, and this is one of them. It is not simple to work with: because of its thinness, the irregularity in tension is more visible but once you know the obstacle you can easily skip it, isn’t it? Anyway, this is a yarn perfect for light, flowing summer cardigans and pulls, above all in this wonderful shade of pink!

Pavone Viola | Purple Peafowl

Ecco cosa ho combinato in queste settimane. Non molto direi, ma almeno mi sono cimentata in qualcosa di nuovo.

This is what I’ve done in the last two weeks. Not a lot, I know, but at least I experimented on something new.

Con i due gomitoli di Loden e uno e poco più di Silk Garden avanzati dal Rotation, ho improvvisato questo bolero, sperimentando il Contiguos Method ed utilizzando uno dei miei punti preferiti, il pavone. Così ho montato le maglie necessarie per il collo, aumentato fino al sottomanica e poi ho alternato i due filati per il resto del lavoro, finchè non sono finiti. Per il bordo ho optato per l’i-cord. Ho infine dimenticato di fare l'asola per il bottone e quindi ho pensato di usare il fermascialle della Knit Pro per chiudere il bolero. Oooooopsss!

With two balls of Loden and one and a little more of Silk Garden, leftovers from Rotation, I improvised this bolero, using the Contiguos Method and one of my favorites stitches, feather and fun. So I casted on the right number of stitches for the neck and I increased until the underarms. I then alternated the two yarns until I finished them. For the edges I’ve chosen the i-cord bind off. I eventually forgot to do the buttonhole so I thought usign my Knit Pro pinshawl. Oooopsss!

E ora non mi resta che cercare un bel vestitino, magari viola, da abbinarci!  =)

And now the only thing I’ve to do is to find a lovely dress to go with it! =)

Zephyr

Il gruppo Kal from Italy su Ravelry ha scelto di eseguire, per il mese di Marzo, il pattern Argo di Svetlana Volkova per sperimentare il Contiguos Method. Questo nuovo sistema, ideato da Susie Myers (SusieM su Ravelry), permette di realizzare pullover, cardigan e quant’altro top down e senza cuciture, ma eseguendo gli aumenti in un modo alternativo rispetto ai classici raglan o set-in-sleeves.

The Ravelry group Kal from Italy has chosen to knit, for the month of March, Argo pattern by Svetlana Volkova to experiment the Contiguos Method. This new system, ideated by Susie Myers (SusieM on Ravelry), permits to knit a pullover, cardigan or whatever you want, top-down and seamlessly, increasing in an alternative way from  classic raglan or set-in-sleeves methods.

 

Sono stata subito colpita da questo nuovo tipo di costruzione e ho curiosato qua e là alla ricerca di un pattern che attirasse la mia attenzione e alla fine ho trovato Zephyr, un cardigan con scollo a V decorato da un delizioso motivo a coste a chiuso da due grandi alamari. E non potevo fare scelta migliore. Non solo ho avuto modo di provare il Contiguos Method, che ritengo eccezionale, ma ho anche imparato un nuovo e utilissimo modo per avviare le maglie, il Judy’s Magic Cast on. Per di più il pattern di Tori Gurbisz è scritto alla perfezione ed è super dettagliato, quindi non c’è stato verso di sbagliare un punto e il risultato che ho ottenuto mi piace tantissimo.

I’ve been hooked immediately by this new king of construction and I browsed here and there to find a captivating pattern and finally I found Zephyr, a V-neck cardigan decorated by a gorgeous rib buttonband and closed by two big toggles. And I couldn’t have made a better choice. I’ve not just tried the Contiguos Method, which I think is exceptional, but I even learnt a new and great useful way of casting on stitches, the Judy’s Magic Cast On. On top of that, Tori Gurbisz’s pattern is written to perfection and is super detailed so you can’t wrong a stitch and I love the result I got.

Come filato ho scelto la Malabrigo Worsted (100% Merino, 100 gr = 193 m) nel bellissimo colore Garnet: un caldo arancio arricchito da tocchi di rosa che lo rendono leggermente variegato. Unico. E’ la seconda volta che uso questo filato e sicuramente non l’ultima, lo trovo incredibilmente morbido e perfetto per la realizzazione di caldi ed avvolgenti capi per l’inverno.

The yarn I’ve chosen is Malabrigo Worsted (100% Merino, 100 g = 193 mt) in the wonderful color Garnet: a lovely variegated warm orange enriched by touches of pink. Unique. It’s the second time I use this yarn and for sure not the last one as I find it incredibly soft and perfect to knit warm and cuddly winter garments.

Damson update

Nelle ultime settimane non ho avuto molto tempo per scrivere ed aggiornare il blog, ma questo non vuol dire che abbia smesso di fare la maglia!

In the last few weeks I haven’t had a lot of time to write the blog, but this is doesn’t means that I didn’t knit!

Tutto ha proceduto alla grande finché . . . non ho finito il filo giusto a qualche ferro dalla fine! La cosa mi ha turbato non poco, visto che ho usato un filato uguale alla Malabrigo Sock utilizzata da Ysolda, ma deve essere successo qualcosa alla mia tensione. Ultimamente, per ogni lavoro che faccio devo usare ferri più sottili di quelli indicati dai patterns o comunque seguire le istruzioni per la taglie più piccole. Quindi è ormai ufficiale: la mia mano si è rilassata! Morale della favola: ho passato non so quanto tempo a cercare un colore che andasse con il lo Ziggy Stardust. Il che non è stato per niente facile visto che, oltre ad essere particolarmente esigente in fatto di colori ed accozzaglie, il filato è piuttosto difficile da abbinare ad altri date le sue sfumature e la presenza di stellina. Ho fatto innumerevoli prove e alla fine ho puntato su un grigio chiaro che richiama i toni polverosi di Ziggy. Ho poi cercato in internet (e trovato, ma deve ancora arrivare!) del Firestar argento e appena lo ricevo lo inserirò qua e là nella parte grigia, in modo da omogeneizzare il tutto.

Everything running  smoothly until . . . I ran out of yarn just a few rows from the end. This thing troubled me a lot as I’ve used the same kind of yarn as Malabrigo Sock used by Ysolda, but something happened to my tension. Lately, for every pattern I knit, I’ve to use smaller needles or choose the smallest size. So it is official: my hands have relaxed! Moral of the story: I spent heaps of time looking for a color that could match Ziggy Stardust and it hasn’t been so easy as I’m very exigent about colors and the yarn has very special shades and, on top of that, the presence of stellina. I did a lot of tries and in the end I focused on a light gray reminiscent the dusty tones of Ziggy. I then chased on internet (and found, but is has still to arrive!) some silver Firestar and as soon as I get it I’m going to insert it here and there in the gray part to homogenize the shawl.

E cosa dire del pattern? Ysolda, come al solito, ha dato il meglio di sé in questo semplice ma accattivante scialle. Niente fronzoli, ma solo una costruzione geniale e un bordo sfizioso che rendono il Damson unico.

And what about the pattern? Ysolda, as usual, gave her best in this simple but captivating shawl. No frippery, but just a genial construction and a gorgeous edging which make Damson unique.

A me piace tantissimo, e a voi?

Rotazione Stellare | Stellar Rotation

Nonostante questo tempo, il mio Rotation è riuscito ad asciugarsi ed eccolo qui!
 
Despite the weather, my Rotation dried and here it is!
 Ho usato, come vi avevo già anticipato, la Noro Silk Garden in una bellissima serie di sfumature che vanno dal verde acido al marrone rossiccio, dal viola al blu elettrico, alternata alla Loden della Grignasco, un tweed viola che mi ha rubato il cuore.
 
I used, as I already anticipated, Noro Silk Garden in a fabulous series of shades that ranges from acid green to reddish brown, from purple to electric blue, alternated to Loden by Grignasco, a purple tweed that stole my heart.

 Il pattern, Rotation, è davvero carino e le istruzioni sono veramente chiare e precise. Ho però apportato qualche modifica: ho eliminato le righe del corpo (il risultato mi sembrava troppo da ape!), ho eseguito un’apertura nello sprone in modo da poter usare questi favolosi bottoni a forma di stellina (ok, mi piacciono le stelle!) che riprendo perfettamente uno dei colori della Noro, ed ho infine allungato le maniche, eseguite sempre a maglia rasata rovescia alternando i due filati. Che ne dite, vi piace?
 
The pattern, Rotation, is very cute and the instructions are very well written. I added some modifications: I eliminated the stripes on the body (the result looked like too much like a bee!), I did an open yoke so I’ve been able to use some wonderful star buttons I had (ok, I like stars!) in the very same shade of one of Noro colors, and finally I made the sleeves longer knitting them in reverse stockinette stitch using both yarns. Do you like it?

Siccome mi è avanzato pure qualche gomitolo pensavo di realizzare un collo, magari a coste o a punto brioche, da abbinare al mio Rotation…ma solo dopo aver finito il Damson!
 
As I have some leftovers I thought I could knit a cowl to go with my Rotation…but only after I finished Damson!
