Zuzu's # 2

Qui a Mackay, in Queensland, tira spesso un vento leggero e fresco, soprattutto lungo la costa, quindi ho ben pensato di farmi una versione più estiva del favoloso Zuzu’s Petals, il collo sciallato di Carina Spencer per proteggere il mio collo che  volentieri si blocca e indolenzisce.

Here in Mackay, Queensland, usually a light and fresh wind blows, above all along the coast, so I thought to knit a summer version of the fabulous Zuzu’s Petals, the shawl-cowl by Carina Spencer, to protect my neck that frequently gets blocked and sore.

Invece della Malabrigo Worsted, questa volta ho usato i due gomitoli e mezzo di Rosarios4 WoolyBoo che mi sono avanzati dal Kara e questo filato, composto da cotone, bambù e lana, si è rivelato perfetto: il mio nuovo Zuzu’s è morbidissimo e protegge senza però essere troppo pesante e soffocante. Lo adoro!

Instead of the Malabrigo Worsted, this time I used some Rosarios4 WoolyBoo leftovers from Kara cardigan and this yarn, with its mix of cotton, bamboo and wool, reveals itself perfectly for this project: my new Zuzu’s is very soft and protects although without being too heavy and warm. I love it!

Kara

Una delle mie ultime fisse riguarda i modelli pubblicati da Quince & Co. Ho già realizzato le meravigliose riedizioni di due dei modelli di Hannah Fettig, Wispy e Featherwiegh Cardirgan (entrambi pubblicati nel libro Knitbot Essential), ma non ho saputo resistere alla tentazione di avviare un altro cardigan stupendo: Kara di Cecily G McDonald. Appena l’ho visto ho deciso che, prima o poi, lo avrei realizzato. Il momento è arrivato quando ho comprato la Rosarios4 WoolyBoo in una favolosa tenuissima sfumatura di rosa pesca che si addice perfettamente all’eleganza dell’effetto pizzo del modello.

One of my last obsession is about the patterns published by Quince & Co. I have already knitted the amazing re-editions of two of Hannah Fettig’s patterns, Wispy and Featherweight Cardigan (both of them published in the ebook Knitbot Essential), but I couldn’t resist the temptation of casting on another wonderful cardigan: Kara by Cecily G McDonald. As soon as I have seen it I decided that, now or then, I would have knitted it. The moment has arrived when I bought Rosarios4 WoolyBoo in a fabulous light peach pink shade which matches perfectly the elegance of the pattern’s lace motif.

Ovviamente, avendo a disposizione un filato totalmente diverso da quello indicato nelle istruzioni, ho dovuto apportare qualche modifica visto che, anche se ho usato lo stesso n. di ferri (4 mm), la mia tensione era completamente diversa.

Obviously, because I have used a totally different yarn from the one suggested by the instructions, I had to do some modifications as, even if I have used the same needles size (4 mm), my gauge was completely off.

Ecco qua le mie modifiche:

Per il dietro del lavoro ho avviato solamente 76 maglie (1 m per la cucitura, 8 ripetizioni + 2 m, 1 altra m per l’altra cucitura) ed ho eseguito un totale di 5 ripetizioni in verticale.

Per le maniche ho avviato ad ambo i lati 45 maglie ed eseguito un totale di 5 ripetizioni in verticale per avere una circonferenza manica leggermente più agiata.

Una volta chiuse le maglie per lo scollo, mi sono rimaste 20 maglie per ciascuna delle due parti del davanti.

Il mio Kara mi piace tantissimo e non vedo l’ora di indossarlo!

Here are my mods:

For the back I CO just 76 stitches (1 st for the sewing, 8 repeats + 2 sts, 1 st for the other sewing) and I have done a total of 5 repeats in vertical.

For the sleeves, I CO 45 stitches and I have done 5 repeats in vertical in order to have a sleeve circumference slightly more comfortable.

Once the neck stitches were bounded off, I had 20 stitches left for each one of the front sections.

I am really pleased with my Kara and I can’t wait to wear it!

Premessa.

Mia sorella, la Fede, mi aveva affidato un suo lavoro a metà perché lo finissi: un pull traforato a maniche corte proveniente da una delle raccolte della Phildar. Era carino, ma era fatto a pezzi e ora che ho familiarizzato con i circolari ed i lavori senza cuciture, non me la sono sentita di proseguirlo e . . . l’ho disfatto! Avevo a disposizione 8 gomitoli da 50 gr per un totale di 1000 m e così mi sono messa alla ricerca di qualcosa di carino, giovanile, portabile ma d’effetto e ho trovato questo . . .

Preface.

My sister Fede gave me one of her projects so I could finish it: a lacy short sleeves pull from one of the Phildar collections. It was very cute, but knitted in pieces and now that I have familiarized myself with circular needles and seamless garments, I couldn’t finish it and . . . I frogged it! I had 8 balls of 50 g for a total of 1000 m so I start looking for something nice, portable but charming and I found this . . .

Il Modello.

Vitamin D di Heidi Kirrmaier. Un pattern che mi ha colpito per la sua morbida linearità e per la sua semplice eleganza. L’ho subito visualizzato indosso a mia sorella, camminando per il Marais sulla via del lavoro, o a fare shopping con le sue amiche super trendy in uno dei mille centri commerciali di Parigi. E così l’ho iniziato e non potevo fare scelta migliore: il pattern è chiarissimo e anche se la serie di ferri accorciati che danno la forma al corpo può sembrare difficile, è scritta alla perfezione e tutto non può che filare liscio come l’olio. La sequenza di gettati danno poi quel semplice dettaglio in più che rendono ancor più speciale il modello. Da rifare.

The Pattern.

Vitamin D by Heidi Kirrmaier. A pattern that hooked me for its soft linearity and simple elegance. I immediately visualized my sister walking along the Marais on her way to work or shopping with her trendy friends in one of the many malls in Paris. So I casted it on and I couldn’t make a better choice: the pattern is super clear and the series of short rows that shapes the body and can appear difficult, it is very well written and everything runs to perfection. Finally the sequence of yarns over add a simple yet special detail to this great pattern. To knit it again!

Il Filato.

Majorque della Fonty, un misto 60 % cotone e 40 % lino che mi è piaciuto tantissimo. Ultimamente sono presa da filati sottili, da lavorare con ferri da 3 o 3,5 mm, e piacciono in particolare quelli in cotone, non lucidi e un po’ rustici, e questo rientra nell’elenco. Non è semplice da lavorare perché proprio a causa della finezza, le irregolarità di tensione risaltano ancora di più, ma una volta che si conosce l’ostacolo non resta che superarlo, no? Insomma, filato perfetto per cardigan e pull leggeri, estivi e svolazzanti, soprattutto in questa bellissima tenue sfumatura di rosa antico!

The Yarn.

I liked very much Majorque by Fonty, 60% cotton and 40% linen. Lately I use a lot very thin yarns, to knit with 3 or 3,5 mm needles, and I really like those in cotton, not shiny at all and a little rustic, and this is one of them. It is not simple to work with: because of its thinness, the irregularity in tension is more visible but once you know the obstacle you can easily skip it, isn’t it? Anyway, this is a yarn perfect for light, flowing summer cardigans and pulls, above all in this wonderful shade of pink!

Something . . .wrong!

Disappunto, ecco cosa provo quando finisco un lavoro e una volta bloccato e pure asciutto, risulta essere piccolo e stretto! E’ quello che mi è capitato con l’ultimo cardigan messo sui ferri . . . e pensare che mi sembrava pure un tantino più grande del previsto.

Disappointment, this is what I feel when I finish and block a garment that becomes smaller once it is dried! This is what happened with my last cardigan . . . and thinking that it looked even a little bigger than what I wanted!

Suppongo che prima o poi mi doveva succedere visto che non lavo e blocco quasi mai i campioni che eseguo, ma non tutto il male vien per nuocere e sbagliando si impara, no? Vorrà dire che la prossima volta che userò del cotone e in particolare questo filato, mi ricorderò di lavare e bloccare per bene il campione e così le misure del lavoro finito potranno essere perfette! 

I guess that it had to happen sooner or later as I am not too use to wash and block every swatch of yarn, but not all of the cloud has a silver lining and from the errors you learn, right? It means that the next time I will use cotton and especially this yarn, I will remember to wash and block well the swatch so the measures of the finished item will be perfect!

Voglio però aggiungere una nota positiva a sì tale mio dispiacere: questo cotone - acquistato in uno dei mille negozi sparsi lungo Rua 25 de Maio a Sao Paulo e specializzati in materiale per sferruzzatrici folli come me – è davvero bellissimo, rustico e per niente lucido come piace a me, e il colore poi è veramente unico, una più tenue sfumatura di Royal Blue da vera principessa!

But I would like to add a positive note to my sorrow: this cotton - purchased in one of the many stores scattered along Rua 25 de Maio in Sao Paulo and specialized in knitting stuff for knit-aholic like me - it's really beautiful, rustic and not shiny at all as I like it, and the color is really unique, a lighter shade of Royal Blue perfect for a princess!

Mi rimetto all’opera: prima disfo questo ristretto “Something Silver” di Veera Valimaki e prima lo posso rifare! =)

Let’s go back to work: the earlier I frog this shrunk “Something Silver” by Veera Valimaki, the earlier I can knit it again! =)
