Citron # 3

Ecco qua il mio terzo Citron, lavorato con uno dei miei filati preferiti: Merino 2 ply della Touch Yarns. Acquistai questa lana - e molte altre! - in Nuova Zelanda, ormai quasi tre anni fa e ogni tanto ne tiro fuori una matassa dal mio armadio per realizzare qualcosa di speciale. Stavolta ho deciso di aggiungere una spilla, in modo da poter portare più comodamente questo scialle non troppo grande, senza farlo così cadere dalle spalle. La spilla l'ho realizzata con dell'organza blu e grigia, negli stessi toni del filo. Che ve ne pare? A me piace mooooooltooooo!

Here it is my third Citron, knitted with one of my favorite yarns: Merino 2 ply by Touch Yarns. I bought this yarn - and many more! - in New Zealand, nearly 3 years ago, and every so often I get a skein from my stash to knit something special with it. This time I decided to add a pin to this not so big shawl, in order to wear it more comfortably. I made it with some gray and deep blue organza, in the same shades of the yarn. Do you like it? I personally love it!

Oblivious

Prima ho provato con Ambrosia e quando sono arrivata a metà lavoro l’ho disfatto.

Poi ho tentato con Acorns, l’ho finito e addirittura bloccato, ma il risultato non mi soddisfaceva affatto e quindi l’ho disfatto.

Infine ho improvvisato: ho realizzato un pull top-down, senza pretese, a maglia rasata diritta, con collo “alto” e bordi a coste adornati con dei bottoni dello stesso colore del filato. Il tutto in una taglia più piccola della mia, così quando ho bloccato il capo, con l’allungamento e allargamento proprio del filato, ho finalmente ottenuto qualcosa di decente! 

Amo la consistenza del Rosarios4 Biobamboo, la sua lucentezza e morbidezza, ma devo ammettere che trovare un modello che ne facesse risaltare queste sue caratteristiche è stato difficile. Infatti questo filato è assai pesante ed ha l’indesiderata tendenza a deformarsi ed allungarsi spropositatamente una volta che il capo è lavato e bloccato. E’ un peccato perché il Biobamboo è davvero unico: è così delicato e soffice che si può portare tranquillamente a pelle, perfetto quindi anche per capi per bambini, e i colori sono semplicemente adorabili, ma si sforma davvero troppo facilmente e non so se vale la pena perderci tutto il tempo che ho perso io per realizzare solo una maglia. In compenso rimane la soddisfazione di aver vinto la battaglia!

 

First I tried wit Ambrosia and when I’ve arrived half way, I unravelled it.

Then I tried with Acorns, I finished it and I even blocked it, but the results was unsatisfactory and I unravelled it too.

Finally I improvised: I made a pull top-down, simple, in stockinette stitch, with rolled neck and ribbed edges adorned with some buttons in the same color of the yarn. Everything one size smaller than mine so when I blocked the garment, with the widening and the stretching typical of the yarn, I obtained something decent!

I love the texture of Rosarios4 Biobamboo, its brilliance and softness, but I’ve to admit that find a pattern able to let stand out these characteristics has been very hard. In fact this yarn is really heavy and has the unwantend tendency to lose shape and stretch out a lot once the item has been washed and blocked. It is a pity as Biobamboo is really unique: it is so soft and delicate that you can wear it next to skin and use it even for baby stuff, and the colors are simply adorable, but stretches out too easily and I don’t know if it is worth all that time to realize just a pullover. On the other hand there is the satisfaction of having won the battle!

Horray!

Mi trovo in una zona tropicale dove, anche se è pieno inverno, le temperature dovrebbero essere miti e gradevoli, mentre a me sembra d’essere nel deserto! Di giorno il termometro si avvicina quasi sempre ai 25 gradi, invece di sera la temperatura scende e l’umidità si alza così tanto che a volte fa davvero freddo. Allora io, onde evitare di prendere un altro bel raffreddore, ho rispolverato la bellissima lana blu che avevo usato per fare (e disfare!) Enso e ho realizzato un cardigan che avevo sott’occhio già da un pezzo. 

At the moment I live in a tropical area where, even if it is mid-winter, temperatures should be mild and nice, while I feel being in the middle of the desert! By day, the thermometer always shows around 25 degrees, while by night the temperature drops and the humidity goes up so much that it is usually quite chilly. So, instead of catching another cold, I dusted off the beautiful blue wool that I’ve used to knit (and un-knit!) Enso, to make one of the many cardigans I’ve always liked.

Hooray si è rivelato perfetto sotto ogni punto di vista: spiegazioni chiarissime, presenza di avvolgenti trecce che fanno subito pensare all’inverno, modello adatto per il filato che avevo e soprattutto assai carino! Ora sì che sono pronta per uscire la sera! 

Hooray revealed itself perfect under every point of view: a well written pattern, the presence of cuddly cables which reminds me immediately of winter time, ideal pattern for the yarn I had and, above all, super cute! Now I am ready to go out by night!

Something . . .wrong!

Disappunto, ecco cosa provo quando finisco un lavoro e una volta bloccato e pure asciutto, risulta essere piccolo e stretto! E’ quello che mi è capitato con l’ultimo cardigan messo sui ferri . . . e pensare che mi sembrava pure un tantino più grande del previsto.

Disappointment, this is what I feel when I finish and block a garment that becomes smaller once it is dried! This is what happened with my last cardigan . . . and thinking that it looked even a little bigger than what I wanted!

Suppongo che prima o poi mi doveva succedere visto che non lavo e blocco quasi mai i campioni che eseguo, ma non tutto il male vien per nuocere e sbagliando si impara, no? Vorrà dire che la prossima volta che userò del cotone e in particolare questo filato, mi ricorderò di lavare e bloccare per bene il campione e così le misure del lavoro finito potranno essere perfette! 

I guess that it had to happen sooner or later as I am not too use to wash and block every swatch of yarn, but not all of the cloud has a silver lining and from the errors you learn, right? It means that the next time I will use cotton and especially this yarn, I will remember to wash and block well the swatch so the measures of the finished item will be perfect!

Voglio però aggiungere una nota positiva a sì tale mio dispiacere: questo cotone - acquistato in uno dei mille negozi sparsi lungo Rua 25 de Maio a Sao Paulo e specializzati in materiale per sferruzzatrici folli come me – è davvero bellissimo, rustico e per niente lucido come piace a me, e il colore poi è veramente unico, una più tenue sfumatura di Royal Blue da vera principessa!

But I would like to add a positive note to my sorrow: this cotton - purchased in one of the many stores scattered along Rua 25 de Maio in Sao Paulo and specialized in knitting stuff for knit-aholic like me - it's really beautiful, rustic and not shiny at all as I like it, and the color is really unique, a lighter shade of Royal Blue perfect for a princess!

Mi rimetto all’opera: prima disfo questo ristretto “Something Silver” di Veera Valimaki e prima lo posso rifare! =)

Let’s go back to work: the earlier I frog this shrunk “Something Silver” by Veera Valimaki, the earlier I can knit it again! =)

Alaska Snowflakes

Finalmente sono riuscita a fotografare il cardigan di mio nipote, realizzato seguendo il disegno del Canyon Cardigan di Eunny Jang pubblicato su Interweave Knits Fall 2011 ed usando l’Alaska della DROPS Designs (100% pure lana vergine, 50 gr = 70 m, colore 12). 

La tecnica del Fair Isle mi piace davvero tanto e vedere il disegno finito mi ha regalato una grandissima soddisfazione. La parte più difficile e paurosa è stata sicuramente quella del taglio dello steek, ma per fortuna è filato tutto liscio come l’olio e niente si è disfatto.

La DROPS Alaska mi ha stupita, un filato davvero morbido e piacevole da lavorare, con un ottimo rapporto qualità-prezzo. Tutti motivi che mi incoraggiano a comprarla di nuovo. Il blu che ho scelto, un blu polveroso e non troppo vivace, si è accostato benissimo al grigio tortora dei fiocchi di neve del motivo e il risultato è perfetto! 

I finally had time to take some photos of my nephew’s cardigan, knitted following the motif chart of Canyon Cardigan by Eunny Jang published in Interweave Knits Fall 2011 and using Alaska by DROPS Designs (100% pure new wool, 50 gr = 70 m, color 12).

I really like Fair Isle technique and seeing the pattern finished gave me a lot of satisfaction. The hardest and scariest part has definitely been the cutting of the steek, but luckily everything run smoothly and nothing got unraveled.

I am amazed by DROPS Alaska, a really soft and nice yarn to work, with an excellent value for money. All reasons that  encourage me to buy it again. The blue I’ve chosen, a dusty blue and not too bright, matched perfectly with the gray snowflakes of the motif and the result is perfect!
