Rockefeller!

West. Scialle. Knitalong. Mettete insieme queste tre piccole parole ed otterrete Rockefeller, lo scialle a due colori disegnato dal mitico Stephen West in occasione del suo nuovo  Mystery KAL 2012.

Lo scorso anno – non so per quale assurda ragione – me lo sono lasciato sfuggire, ma questa volta non ho perso tempo ed ho comprato il modello appena l’ho visto. Poi mi sono iscritta al gruppo di Ravelry, Westknits MysteryShawl Knit-a-long, ed è così ufficialmente iniziata la ricerca affannosa del filato perfetto, ovvero la parte più difficile – soprattutto per una come me che non la smetterebbe mai di sperimentare e provare ogni combinazione di colori possibile ed immaginabile. Ma ci ho provato comunque e alla fine mi sono decisa, o quasi. 

Last year – I don’t know why – I didn’t participate, but this time I lost no time and I bought the pattern as soon as I’ve seen it. Then I subscribed to the Ravelry group Westknits Mystery Shawl Knit-a-long, and hence the tough research for the perfect yarn has officially begun, or rather the hardest part – above all for whom like me, wouldn’t never stop to experiment and try every possible and imaginable combination of colors. But in the end I decided, almost.

Oggi è arrivato il mio pacco con le meravigliose matassine comprate da Yarn So Fine, un negozio australiano di filati online. La proprietaria, Katrina, si è dimostrata utilissima e magnificamente efficiente, fotografando i filati uno accanto all’altro e aiutandomi così nella scelta dei colori. Ecco il risultato (ovviamente soggetto a futuri ripensamenti ed ulteriori acquisti!).

 

Today I got my parcel containing beautiful little skeins bought from Yarn So Fine, an online Australian yarn shop. The owner, Katrina, has been very useful and magnificently efficient, taking pics of the yarns one next to the other, helping me chosing the colors. Here is the result (obviously subject to future second thoughts and further purchases!).

Pavone Viola | Purple Peafowl

Ecco cosa ho combinato in queste settimane. Non molto direi, ma almeno mi sono cimentata in qualcosa di nuovo.

This is what I’ve done in the last two weeks. Not a lot, I know, but at least I experimented on something new.

Con i due gomitoli di Loden e uno e poco più di Silk Garden avanzati dal Rotation, ho improvvisato questo bolero, sperimentando il Contiguos Method ed utilizzando uno dei miei punti preferiti, il pavone. Così ho montato le maglie necessarie per il collo, aumentato fino al sottomanica e poi ho alternato i due filati per il resto del lavoro, finchè non sono finiti. Per il bordo ho optato per l’i-cord. Ho infine dimenticato di fare l'asola per il bottone e quindi ho pensato di usare il fermascialle della Knit Pro per chiudere il bolero. Oooooopsss!

With two balls of Loden and one and a little more of Silk Garden, leftovers from Rotation, I improvised this bolero, using the Contiguos Method and one of my favorites stitches, feather and fun. So I casted on the right number of stitches for the neck and I increased until the underarms. I then alternated the two yarns until I finished them. For the edges I’ve chosen the i-cord bind off. I eventually forgot to do the buttonhole so I thought usign my Knit Pro pinshawl. Oooopsss!

E ora non mi resta che cercare un bel vestitino, magari viola, da abbinarci!  =)

And now the only thing I’ve to do is to find a lovely dress to go with it! =)

Damson update

Nelle ultime settimane non ho avuto molto tempo per scrivere ed aggiornare il blog, ma questo non vuol dire che abbia smesso di fare la maglia!

In the last few weeks I haven’t had a lot of time to write the blog, but this is doesn’t means that I didn’t knit!

Tutto ha proceduto alla grande finché . . . non ho finito il filo giusto a qualche ferro dalla fine! La cosa mi ha turbato non poco, visto che ho usato un filato uguale alla Malabrigo Sock utilizzata da Ysolda, ma deve essere successo qualcosa alla mia tensione. Ultimamente, per ogni lavoro che faccio devo usare ferri più sottili di quelli indicati dai patterns o comunque seguire le istruzioni per la taglie più piccole. Quindi è ormai ufficiale: la mia mano si è rilassata! Morale della favola: ho passato non so quanto tempo a cercare un colore che andasse con il lo Ziggy Stardust. Il che non è stato per niente facile visto che, oltre ad essere particolarmente esigente in fatto di colori ed accozzaglie, il filato è piuttosto difficile da abbinare ad altri date le sue sfumature e la presenza di stellina. Ho fatto innumerevoli prove e alla fine ho puntato su un grigio chiaro che richiama i toni polverosi di Ziggy. Ho poi cercato in internet (e trovato, ma deve ancora arrivare!) del Firestar argento e appena lo ricevo lo inserirò qua e là nella parte grigia, in modo da omogeneizzare il tutto.

Everything running  smoothly until . . . I ran out of yarn just a few rows from the end. This thing troubled me a lot as I’ve used the same kind of yarn as Malabrigo Sock used by Ysolda, but something happened to my tension. Lately, for every pattern I knit, I’ve to use smaller needles or choose the smallest size. So it is official: my hands have relaxed! Moral of the story: I spent heaps of time looking for a color that could match Ziggy Stardust and it hasn’t been so easy as I’m very exigent about colors and the yarn has very special shades and, on top of that, the presence of stellina. I did a lot of tries and in the end I focused on a light gray reminiscent the dusty tones of Ziggy. I then chased on internet (and found, but is has still to arrive!) some silver Firestar and as soon as I get it I’m going to insert it here and there in the gray part to homogenize the shawl.

E cosa dire del pattern? Ysolda, come al solito, ha dato il meglio di sé in questo semplice ma accattivante scialle. Niente fronzoli, ma solo una costruzione geniale e un bordo sfizioso che rendono il Damson unico.

And what about the pattern? Ysolda, as usual, gave her best in this simple but captivating shawl. No frippery, but just a genial construction and a gorgeous edging which make Damson unique.

A me piace tantissimo, e a voi?

Rotazione Stellare | Stellar Rotation

Nonostante questo tempo, il mio Rotation è riuscito ad asciugarsi ed eccolo qui!
 
Despite the weather, my Rotation dried and here it is!
 Ho usato, come vi avevo già anticipato, la Noro Silk Garden in una bellissima serie di sfumature che vanno dal verde acido al marrone rossiccio, dal viola al blu elettrico, alternata alla Loden della Grignasco, un tweed viola che mi ha rubato il cuore.
 
I used, as I already anticipated, Noro Silk Garden in a fabulous series of shades that ranges from acid green to reddish brown, from purple to electric blue, alternated to Loden by Grignasco, a purple tweed that stole my heart.

 Il pattern, Rotation, è davvero carino e le istruzioni sono veramente chiare e precise. Ho però apportato qualche modifica: ho eliminato le righe del corpo (il risultato mi sembrava troppo da ape!), ho eseguito un’apertura nello sprone in modo da poter usare questi favolosi bottoni a forma di stellina (ok, mi piacciono le stelle!) che riprendo perfettamente uno dei colori della Noro, ed ho infine allungato le maniche, eseguite sempre a maglia rasata rovescia alternando i due filati. Che ne dite, vi piace?
 
The pattern, Rotation, is very cute and the instructions are very well written. I added some modifications: I eliminated the stripes on the body (the result looked like too much like a bee!), I did an open yoke so I’ve been able to use some wonderful star buttons I had (ok, I like stars!) in the very same shade of one of Noro colors, and finally I made the sleeves longer knitting them in reverse stockinette stitch using both yarns. Do you like it?

Siccome mi è avanzato pure qualche gomitolo pensavo di realizzare un collo, magari a coste o a punto brioche, da abbinare al mio Rotation…ma solo dopo aver finito il Damson!
 
As I have some leftovers I thought I could knit a cowl to go with my Rotation…but only after I finished Damson! 

Damson Stellato | Starry Damson

Stamani mi sono alzata decisamente con il piede sbagliato e per di più piove. Ho così deciso di dare una piega positiva alla giornata iniziando un nuovo progetto con due materiali d’eccezione: i miei nuovi Knit Pro Symphony Rose e lo  Ziggy Stardust.

This morning I awoke in a very bad mood and, on top of that, it is rainy. So, to give a positive turn to the day, I begun a new project using two exceptional materials: my new Knit Pro Symphonie Rose and Ziggy Stardust.

Non sto parlando di David Bowie, ma di un acquisto che ho fatto durante il mio ultimo yarn-tour a Londra lo scorso Ottobre. Si tratta di un filato per calzini (100 gr = 400 m, 75/20/5 merino superwash/nylon/stellina) prodotto da I knit or Dye, I knit London. Mi ricorda molto lo Starry della Dream in Color che ho usato l’anno scorso per Hari e visto che il risultato mi era piaciuto tanto, appena ho visto Ziggy l’ho comprato. Stavolta ho prediletto le sfumature del viola (mi sento un po’ come Picasso . . . attraverso varie fasi di colore e ora è la volta del viola!), in una tinta molto polverosa impreziosita dai sottili filamenti di stellina che rendono questo filato leggermente scintillante, ma senza renderlo per questo troppo appariscente.

I’m not talking about David Bowie but about a yarn I bought during my last yarn-tour in London last October. It is a sock yarn (100 gr = 400 m, 75/20/5 super wash merino/nylon/stellina) produced by I Knit or Dye, I knit London. It reminds me a lot Starry by Dream in Color that I used last year to knit Hari and as I really liked the result, I decided to buy Ziggy as soon as I saw it. This time I’ve chosen purple shades (I feel like Picasso . . . I usually cross various color phases and now I’m in the purple one!), in a dusty tint enhanced by thin filaments of stellina. A nice sparkling yarn, but not too showy.

 
Il modello che ho scelto è il Damson di Ysolda. Vado quindi sul sicuro e mentre lo sferruzzo e vedo come viene, mi domando perché non l’ho fatto prima! Ho quasi finito la sezione a legaccio e sono davvero impaziente di iniziare i ventagli del bordo . . .

The pattern is Damson by Ysolda so I play it safe and while I’m knitting it and I see how beautifully is turning out, I wonder why I didn’t knit it before! I nearly finished the first garter stitch section and I cant’ wait to start the scallops edge . . .

Flop

La scorsa settimana, messo da parte l’amato Coraline, ho iniziato un nuovo modello: il Boreal di Kate Davies. Mi è piaciuto fin da subito e ho pensato di usare la Noro Silk Garden e la Loden che mi sono portata fin quaggiù nel mio bagaglio. Il colore della prima è un miscuglio, bellissimo, di viola fiorentina, marrone, verde acido e viola elettrico, mentre la Loden è un filato tweed nello stesso preciso colore del viola fiorentina presente anche nella Noro. Per questo ovvio motivo il disegno a stelle e alberelli del Boreal non risaltava abbastanza e, con molto rammarico, ho deciso di disfare tutto e usare quest’accoppiata di fili per un altro progetto. Resto pur sempre dell’idea che, cambiando il colore di fondo, avrei potuto usare lo stesso la Noro a creare un motivo sfumato di gradevole effetto ottico, ma le coppie perfette non si scoppiano e quindi eccomi qui, alle prese con . . . Rotation!

Last week, I put aside the beloved Coraline and started a new pattern: Boreal by Kate Davies. I liked it right away and I thought to use Noro Silk Garden and Loden that I brought down here with me, in my luggage. The first is a beautiful mixture of purple, brown, lime green and electric purple, while Loden is a tweed yarn in the very same purple color of the one present in Noro. For this obvious reason, the Boreal’s motif of stars and trees didn’t stand out enough and, with much regret, I decided to undo everything and use this fabulous couple of colors for another project. I still think that changing the background color, I still could use Noro to create a gradient motif of a great visual effect, but you cannot break up perfect couples hence here I am knitting . . . Rotation!

Goodale

Ho finito, proprio all’ultimo, il mio Goodale! E’ stata un po’ lunga visto che ho dovuto usare ferri da 3 mm, ma alla fine ce l’ho fatta.
 
Ho seguito le istruzioni per la taglia 38” ed ecco qui le mie modifiche.
 
Ho eseguito gli aumenti del busto ogni 10 ferri invece che ogni 8, per un totale di 8 volte, in modo da avere un corpo leggermente più  lungo.
 
Ho eseguito il bordino a coste finale dopo aver piegato i lembi (13 m in alto e 29 in basso), in modo da avere un capo meno pesante.
 
Ho cucito lungo i lati senza lasciare l’apertura per le tasche che mi piacciono, ma che non avrei usato.
 
Adoro il risultato e credo che sarà il mio must di quest’anno! =)

Come vi ho detto domani parto, me ne torno in Australia sperando di starci meglio, continuerò sicuramente a sferruzzare come una matta, ma non so se potrò aggiornare spesso il blog, comunque vada...a presto!

 I finished, just before leaving, my Goodale! It has been a long project as I used 3 mm needles, but I did it!
 
I followed the instructions for the size 38” and here are my mods.
 
For the body, I increased every 10th round instead of every 8th, for a total of 8 times, in order to have something longer.
 
I folded the front before the ribbing (13 sts on the top and 29 on the bottom) so the ribbing is not bulky.
 
I sewed the front all along the edges without forming the pockets as I would never use them.
 
I love the result and I think Goodale will be my must for this season!

As I told you, tomorrow I fly to Australia, I will continue to knit for sure but I don't know if I'll have the time to write here in my blog, anyway...see you soon!

Elsebeth Lavold | Silky Wool

Silky Wool: 45% lana, 35% seta e 20% nylon; 50g = 175m, colore 63.

Adoro questo filato per un sacco di ragioni. Primo: mi ricorda moltissimo un altro che a sua volta mi fece innamorare, il Butterfly della Rosarios 4. Nonostante la percentuale di seta nella Silky Wool sia nettamente inferiore, al tatto e alla vista invece questi due filati sono assai simili: morbidi seppur non propriamente “setosi” e lucidi, anzi piuttosto rustici e non proprio brillanti. Secondo: era da un po’ che non usavo un filo così sottile e mi è piaciuto avere tra le mani un alto numero di maglie, tutte perfette, che non fanno una piega. Devo infatti dire che la Silky Wool è piuttosto rigida e poco elastica e le maglie restano in posizione senza cedere né deformarsi e adoro questa sua caratteristica. Terzo: il colore che ho scelto mi fa impazzire (anche gli altri però non sono da meno): un meraviglioso melanzana che già mi vedo addosso, magari insieme a del rosso o del blu. Ne deduco che i viola entrano a pieno titolo tra i miei colori preferiti!

Ma vediamo di essere un po’ più tecniche e un po’ meno passionali.

Un piccolo appunto circa le “istruzioni” riportate sulla fascetta: si raccomanda di usare ferri da 4 mm per ottenere 22 m in 10 cm. Io ho dovuto usare punte da 3 mm. Ovviamente ognuna ha la propria mano e tensione, la mia è risultata essere ovviamente un pochino più lenta, ma trovavo decisamente troppo larghe e sformate le maglie lavorate con ferri più grossi da quelli da me scelti.

 

Il filato è, come ho detto, abbastanza rustico e poco elastico, permettendo così un’ottima definizione dei punti e quindi delle trecce e di motivi lace, io però l’ho usato per un modello semplice e senza fronzoli (però non vi dico quale!). 

Scorre bene sui ferri e credo sia uno dei fili che più mi dà soddisfazione lavorare, un vero piacere vederlo scivolare tra le dita. Provare per credere.

Ho già convinto mia sorella a comprarlo per realizzare il Dahlia Cardigan di Heather Zoppetti, e voi che fate? Lo potete trovare da Unfilodi.

I love this yarn for a lot of reasons. First, it reminds me another one I love, Butterfly by Rosarios 4. Although in Silky Wool the percentage of silk is much lower, to the touch and the eyesight these two yarns are very similar, soft but not exactly "silky" and shiny, maybe more rustic and not exactly brilliant. Second, it was a bit that I did not use a fingering yarn and I loved having in my hands a large number of stitches, all perfectly aligned. In fact, I have to say that Silky Wool is quite rigid and inelastic and stitches remain in place without yielding or deformation, I love this its characteristic. Third: the color I chose drives me crazy (even though the others are no less lovely): I bought a wonderful eggplant purple and I already see him with reds or blues. I conclude that purple is now one of my favorite colors! 

But let's be a little more technical and less passionate.

A little note about the "instructions" given on the band: it is recommended to use 4 mm needles to obtain 22 stitches in 10 cm. I had to use 3 mm ones. Of course each person has its own gauge and tension, mine is found to be obviously a little slower, but stitches were coming out far too wide and baggy with larger needles, such as 3,5 or 4 mm ones.

The yarn is, as I said, quite rustic and not very elastic, allowing an excellent stitches definition and perfect for cables and lace patterns, but I've used it for a simple pattern, with no frills (but I’m not going to tell you which one!). 

The yarn runs well on the needles and I think is one of the yarns that gives me more satisfaction while I knit with it, a pleasure to feel it slipping through my fingers. Seeing is believing.

Ecco qui il mio primo lavoro in assoluto eseguito a punto brioche a due colori.

Il modello, come già sapete, è di Nancy Marchant, The Queen of the Brioche Stitch e lo potete trovare sul suo libro, sotto il nome di Laars Machetten.

Ho usato, come suggerisce lei, la Cascade 220, in marrone e vinaccia, due colori che stanno davvero bene insieme. Ho utilizzato punte da 4 mm e quindi ho montato un numero minore di maglie, solo 64 invece di 72. Ho infine eseguito solo due intrecci, invece dei tre richiesti dal pattern, perché mi sembrava che i miei “scaldastivali” fossero già lunghi abbastanza.

Che dire…sono rimasta affascinata da questo punto, tutt’altro che difficile, e dalle numerose varianti che si possono eseguire, a partire dalla scelta dei colori agli intrecci e via dicendo. Sicuramente lo sfrutterò di nuovo!

Here is my first brioche stitch project, knitted in two colors.

The pattern, as you already know, is by Nancy Marchant, The Queen of the Brioche Stitch, and you can find it in her book under the name Laars Manchetten.

I used, like she suggests, Cascade 220 (100% wool, 100 gr = 200 m), in a lovely brown and a purplish color, two colors perfectly matched. I used 4 mm needles so I casted on a different number of stitches, only 64 instead of 72. I finally knitted just two crossings, while the pattern requires three, because I think my “bootwarmers” were already long enough.

What can I say? I am fascinated by brioche stitch, not difficult at all, and by the several variations you can do with it, from the choice of the colors to the cables and so on. I will use it again for sure!
