Nancy Marchant è nata in Indiana
ma adesso vive e lavora ad Amsterdam. E’ una graphic designer, ma è tra le
knitters di tutto il mondo è meglio conosciuta come La Regina del Punto
Brioche.
Io non sapevo nemmeno chi fosse finché
su Twist Collective Fall 2011 non ho visto Hosta, una splendida sciarpa
realizzata a punto brioche con due colori contrastanti, formata da un sinuoso
susseguirsi di foglie. Ho subito comprato il pattern ed iniziato a curiosare
qua e là alla ricerca di informazioni su questo affascinante e versatile punto,
nonché su colei che lo ha fatto risorgere. Mi sono così ritrovata tra le mani
qualche Vogue Knitting con articoli super dettagliati riguardo al tema scritti
da Nancy. La curiosità non ha perciò fatto altro che crescere e ho finito per
comprare il suo ultimo libro: Knitting Brioche, pubblicato da North Light Books
nel 2009, e sono rimasta sbalordita di fronte a quest’opera d’arte.
Il libro contiene tutto quello
che c’è da sapere sul punto brioche: a partire da dettagliatissime fotografie e
spiegazioni passo passo di tutte le tecniche del punto brioche, 60 diversi
pattern monocromi e multicolore e infine ben 25 pattern di maglioni ed
accessori tutti realizzati a punto brioche, con una particolare attenzione all’uso
dei colori. Un tesoro per chi vuole imparare questa tecnica.
Nancy inoltre ha sviluppato nel
corso degli anni una nuova serie di abbreviazioni per il punto brioche,
cercando di stabilire una terminologia adatta e semplice che, come suggerisce
lei stessa, tutte le designers dovrebbero usare, in modo da non confondere le
idee a chi si vuole cimentare in questo ancora inesplorato territorio.

I didn’t know her until, on Twist Collective Fall
2011, I have seen Hosta, a beautiful scarf made
in brioche stitch with two contrasting colors, formed by a winding succession
of leaves. I immediately bought the pattern and started to wander
here and there in search of information on this fascinating and versatile point, as
well as the one who has resurrected it again. So I found

by Nancy. Curiosity has done nothing but grow
and so I ended up buying her latest book: Brioche Knitting, published by North Light Books in 2009, and
I was stunned in front of this masterpiece.
The book contains everything
you need to know about brioche: from highly detailed photographs and step by step explanations of all the techniques for brioche knitting, 60 different
monochrome and multicolor pattern, and finally 25 patterns of sweaters and
accessories all made in brioche
stitch, with a particular emphasis
on the use of colors. A treasure for those who want to learn this technique.
Nancy has also developed over the years
a new set of abbreviations for the
brioche stitch, trying
to establish suitable and simple terms that,
as she herself suggests, all designers should use,
in the way to not confuse those who
want challenge themselves in this unexplored territory.
