Winnowing # 2

Ho cercato per mari e per monti la sfumatura di verde perfetta per lo scialle che avrei dovuto indossare il giorno del matrimonio di mia sorella e quando l’ho trovata ho letteralmente fatto i salti dalla gioia. Il colore in questione è Red Legged Ham Beetle della Cephalopod Yarns e sta divinamente bene accanto al mio vestito verde giada. Arrivata però a casa a San Marcello la temperatura era straordinariamente calda e quindi decisamente non adatta ad un filato in lana merino, seppur sottile e lavorato in modo da ottenere un effetto abbastanza traforato. Questo sarebbe stato il meno, visto che arrivata a circa 10 cm dalla fine del bordo … ho finito il filo!!! E quindi, anche se avessi preso coraggio e deciso di sudare in chiesa, non avrei potuto ugualmente indossare il mio tanto sospirato Winnowing. Che tristezza. Per mettere poi la ciliegina sulla torta, il suddetto filato è al momento out of stock alla CY e quindi non avrei potuto ricomprarlo e soprattutto ritrovare lo stesso bagno di colore, a meno che una persona gentilissima dagli Stati Uniti d’America non avesse deciso di spedirmi una matassa dello stesso preciso bagno di colore del mio Skinny Bugga! e permettermi così di mettere fine a quest’odissea. Ora è finito, lavato ed asciutto e io vorrei essere a casa per andare lentamente incontro all’inverno con il mio bellissimo scialle dalle sfumature verdi!

I have looked everywhere for the right shade of green for the shawl I had to wear the day of my sister’s wedding and when I found it I jumped of joy. The color is Red Legged Ham Beetle by Cephalopod Yarns and it is perfect next to my green jade dress. But when I arrived at home in San Marcello the temperature was extraordinary warm and therefore decidedly not right for a merino yarn, even if in a fingering weight and knitted in a lace pattern. This is the easiest part, as when I reached 10 cm from the end of the shawl border … I run out of yarn!! So, even if I would have had the courage to wear the shawl and swept in the church, I couldn’t put on my lovely Winnowing in any case because I couldn’t finish it. So sad. To put an end to this miserable story, this yarn is at the moment out of stock at Cephalopod so I couldn’t buy it again and, above all, I couldn’t find the same dye lot unless a lovely person from the US wouldn’t sent me a skein of the same same batch of my Skinny Bugga! permitting me to end this odyssey. Now it is finished, washed and blocked, and I wish I was at home to slowly be entering winter with my beautiful green shawl.

Zuzu's # 2

Qui a Mackay, in Queensland, tira spesso un vento leggero e fresco, soprattutto lungo la costa, quindi ho ben pensato di farmi una versione più estiva del favoloso Zuzu’s Petals, il collo sciallato di Carina Spencer per proteggere il mio collo che  volentieri si blocca e indolenzisce.

Here in Mackay, Queensland, usually a light and fresh wind blows, above all along the coast, so I thought to knit a summer version of the fabulous Zuzu’s Petals, the shawl-cowl by Carina Spencer, to protect my neck that frequently gets blocked and sore.

Invece della Malabrigo Worsted, questa volta ho usato i due gomitoli e mezzo di Rosarios4 WoolyBoo che mi sono avanzati dal Kara e questo filato, composto da cotone, bambù e lana, si è rivelato perfetto: il mio nuovo Zuzu’s è morbidissimo e protegge senza però essere troppo pesante e soffocante. Lo adoro!

Instead of the Malabrigo Worsted, this time I used some Rosarios4 WoolyBoo leftovers from Kara cardigan and this yarn, with its mix of cotton, bamboo and wool, reveals itself perfectly for this project: my new Zuzu’s is very soft and protects although without being too heavy and warm. I love it!

Wispy

E' già qualche settimana che il mio Wispy è finito, ma ho aspettato un'occasione speciale per indossarlo e fare qualche scatto. In realtà questo coprispalle era nato per essere indossato sopra il vestito del matrimonio di mia sorella, ma poi il colore del Featherweight è risultato essere migliore e quindi ha vinto lui. Poco male, i bellissimi colori arancio e corallo del mio Wispy (il filato che ho usato è Ella Rae Merino Lace) stanno benissimo sul nero . . . et voilà!

It has already been a few weeks that my Wispy is finished, but I waited a special occasion to wear it and take some photos. In reality this shrug was born to be worn with the dress I choose for my sister's wedding, but as the color of the Featherweight was more appropriate, it won the competition. Not bad, the wonderful coral and orange colors of my Wipsy (the yarn I used is Ella Rae Merino Lace) mix very well with black . . . et voilà!

Qui sono in Brasile, a casa di mio cognato, in occasione del mio compleanno e della mia ultima notte Paulista. Grazie famiglia Villela! =)

Here I am in Brazil, at my brother-in-law's place, for my birthday and last Paulista night. Thank you Villela Family for the wonderful time we spent together! =)

Zuzu

Fine settimana di Pasqua e le Poste sono chiuse quindi io non ho ricevuto i due pacchi “filanti” che sto aspettando da giorni: quello spedito da mia sorella dall’Italia e quello proveniente da Skeins. Uff. Per di più i negozi sono chiusi e così ho dovuto dare fondo alle mie risorse lanifere ed usare ogni singolo grammo di filato avanzato da altri progetti. E pensare che a San Marcello ho un armadio pieno di lana, cotone, bamboo e chi più ne ha più ne metta!

Easter week end and here the Post Office is closed so I didn’t receive the two “yarny” parcels I’m waiting for: the one sent by my sister from Italy and the other one coming from Skeins. Uff. On top of that, shops are closed too and so I had to use every single gram of yarn leftover from other projects. And I still think about the wardrobe full of wool, cotton, bamboo and so on that I’ve in San Marcello!!

 

Insomma, avevo una matassa di Malabrigo Worsted avanzata dallo Zephyr e così ho cercato un pattern carino per poterla utilizzare e su Ravelry ho trovato questo geniale scialle-collo di Carina Spencer, Zuzu’s Petals. In un batter d’occhio l’ho iniziato e in serata era già finito e in fase di bloccaggio. Ve l’ho già detto che amo il colore Garnet e vorrei che Malabrigo lo facesse anche per la Sock così potrei farci il copri spalle per il matrimonio di mia sorella (mi servirebbe un filato di quel preciso colore!). Il modello di Carina è davvero eccezionale e ogni volta che mi trovo davanti a un pattern semplice ma nuovo e valido mi domando: “Ma perché non mi è mai venuto in mente di fare qualcosa così?!”. Maledetta pigrizia, è sempre più facile sferruzzare qualcosa di giù bello e scritto nero su bianco, no? Comunque… vi stra-consiglio Zuzu’s Petals: veloce, d’effetto e perfetto per finire quei gomitoli di lana bellissima che giacciono abbandonati nel vostro baule!

Anyway  . . . I had a skein of Malabrigo Worsted leftover from Zephyr so I looked for a lovely pattern to knit with it and on Ravelry I found this genial shawl-cowl by Carina Spencer, Zuzu’s Petals. In a second I began it and in the evening it was already done and blocking. I already told you that I absolutely love this Garnet color and I wish Malabrigo did it even in Sock yarn so I could knit my shrug for my sister wedding with it (I need a yarn in this very same color!). Carina’s pattern is amazing and every time I have in front of me a simple but yet useful and lovely pattern I ask myself “Why I didn’t ever think to design something like that?!”. Damned laziness, it is always easier knit something already written on black and white, no? Well, I recommend you Zuzu’s Petals: it is quick, exquisite and perfect to finish those unfortunate single balls of yarn that lay abandoned in your stash!

Il freddo è arrivato e cosa c’è di meglio di un  morbido scialle per tenere al caldo collo e spalle?!

Ok, questa è una scusa.

La verità è che ho comprato un paio di nuove ballerine arancioni e non ho saputo resistere alla tentazione di realizzare un accessorio da abbinarci.

La scelta è caduta di nuovo sulla Alpaca Silk della Blue Sky Alpacas (50% alpaca, 50 % seta, 50 gr = 134 m, colore 130), nello stesso preciso colore delle mie scarpe: un caldo arancio perfetto per l’autunno.

Il modello stavolta è il Mizutama Shawl di Olga Buraya-Kefelian, una delle mie designer preferite. Il pattern prevede due opzioni per confezionare lo scialle: o partendo dalla base e quindi montando il numero totale di maglie necessarie, o dalla punta aumentando le maglie ai lati ad ogni giro fino alla dimensione desiderata. Siccome il mio filato è diverso da quello usato da Olga e pensavo non sarebbe bastato, ho preferito partire dalla punta in modo da potermi fermare una volta finiti i gomitoli a disposizione. Scelta azzeccata visto che ho potuto ripetere il motivo a fori solo per 29 volte invece delle 36 previste dalle istruzioni. Comunque la grandezza che ho ottenuto è perfetta e forse più ampio sarebbe stato anche fin troppo ingombrante.

 

The cold arrived and what is better than a soft shawl to keep our neck and shoulders warm?

Ok, this is just an excuse.

The truth is that I bought a new pair of orange ballet shoes and I couldn’t resist to knit an accessorize to go with them.

The yarn chosen is again Alpaca Silk by Blue Sky Alpacas (50% alpaca, 50% silk, 50 g = 134 m, color 130), in the very same color of my shoes: a warm orange perfect for the autumn.

The pattern is Mizutama Shawl by Olga Buraya-Kefelian, one of my favorite designers. The pattern includes two options to knit the shawl: or from the base casting on the total number of stitches needed, or from the point by increasing the stitches on each side at every row until you rich the desired size. As my yarn is different from the one used by Olga and I supposed it was not enough, I preferred starting from the point so I could stop knitting once the balls were finished. Right choice as I have been able to repeat the polka dots pattern only 29 times instead of the 36 provided by the instructions. However, the size is perfect and maybe bigger would have been too cumbersome.
