Meret

Stavo curiosando su Ravelry nella sezione “cappelli” e tra i primi in classifica è apparso il Meret (Mistery Beret) di Wolly Wormhead con più di 4000 berretti già realizzati dalle knitters di tutto il mondo. Di Wolly potete trovare una bella intervista su Yards ofYarn e potete anche dare un’occhiata al suo sito, dove non avrete che l’imbarazzo della scelta tra tantissimi (e tutti favolosi) modelli di cappelli, sia per grandi che per piccini. Potete trovare anche un gruppo dedicato ai lei e ai suoi cappelli su Ravelry, Wormhead's Hats, dove al momento è in corso il Mystery KAL 2011.

Insomma, conscia della celebrità di Wolly Wormhead e dei suoi cappelli, mi sono messa all’opera e ho tirato fuori la mia versione del Meret. Come filato ho scelto la New Jersey della Sesia in un fantastico color petrolio acceso e devo dire che più lavoro questo filato e più mi piace, sia per la sua composizione di 100% merino irrestringibile, sia per la sua resa e per la buona definizione dei punti che se ne ottiene. E poi Sesia è una delle poche buone ditte di filati italiane, quindi un motivo in più di per usare i suoi prodotti.

I was browsing in the Ravelry hat section and in the one of the first positions of the classify I found Meret (Mistery Beret) by Wolly Wormhead, with more than 4000 berets already done by the knitters of all around the world. About Wolly you can find a wonderful interview on Yards of Yarn and you can have a look at her site too, where you can chose from numerous (and all fabulous) hats, for both adults and kids. You can find even a Ravelry group dedicated to Wolly and her hats, Wormhead's Hat, where at the moment is in progress the Mystery KAL 2011.

So, conscious of the fame of Wolly and her hats, I began the work and I knitted my Meret. Like yarn I chose New Jersey by Sesia in a wonderful bright teal color and I have to say that the more I knit with it, the more I like it: I love its 100% merino super wash composition and its good stitch definition. On top of that, Sesia is one of the few good Italian yarn producers, another good reason to use its yarns.

Knitalong

Con knitalong  ci si riferisce a un insieme di persone che eseguono lo stesso lavoro a maglia o per puro divertimento o con un fine ben preciso. Il knitalong infatti va indietro nel tempo quando donne e bambine facevano calzini, maglioni, sciarpe e guanti per i soldati impegnati nelle guerre, una pratica di ieri come di oggi solo con scopi diversi a seconda della situazione. 

Knitalong refers to a group of people who is knitting the same pattern just for fun or with a clear goal. Knitalong goes back in time when women and girls used to knit socks, sweaters, scarves and gloves for the soldiers involved in wars, a practice used yesterday but even today just with different purposes, depending on the situation.

Il knitalong, conosciuto anche come KAL, ha poi preso sempre più campo grazie alla comunicazione veloce di internet e così le knitters di tutto il globo possono confrontarsi e parlare del comune progetto iniziato insieme, dandosi preziosi consigli e suggerimenti. Così, seppur non partecipando fisicamente a nessuna riunione, si ha la possibilità di condividere i propri progressi, problemi ed idee con gli altri, traendo spesso spunto e ispirazione dai lavori altrui, ma anche arricchendo il proprio bagaglio personale con nuove amicizie e tecniche che da sole non avreste mai affrontato.

Knitalong, also known as KAL, today has become very famous thank to the increasing of the use of internet so knitters of all around the globe can meet and talk of the projects started together, giving themselves valuable advices and suggestions. Thus, although not physically participate in any meeting, you have the opportunity to share your progress, problems and ideas with the other knitters, often drawing inspiration from the work of the others, but also enrich your personal luggage with new friendships and techniques that alone you would never have had the courage to do it.

I temi dei knitalongs sono davvero infiniti, spaziando tra calzini, sciarpe e cappelli fino ad arrivare a vere e proprie imprese della maglia, come il knitalong Holly organizzato da Unfilodi e incentrato sulla lavorazione del complesso pattern disegnato da Kaffe Fassett per Rowan.

Knitalong’s themes are infinite, ranging from socks, scarves and hats until you get to the real business, as the knitalong organized by Unfilodi and focused on Holly, a very complex pattern designed by Kaffe Fassett for Rowan.

Ci sono poi i Mystery Knitalongs, ovvero knitalongs dove ai partecipanti viene fornito un pattern “a puntate”, di solito con cadenza settimanale. Spesso il soggetto viene esplicitato nel primo indizio e nei successivi vengono fornite le indicazioni per portarlo avanti, fino al termine del lavoro.

And finally there are the Mystery Knitalongs: in those a pattern is given to the participants in form of “clues”, usually on a weekly basis. Often the subject is revealed in the first clue and in the following are provided directions for taking it forward, until the end of the work.

E’ la prima volta che partecipo a un KAL e per di più ho finito per prendere parte a un Mystery: la designer è Emma Fassio, il pattern è appunto chiamato La Donna Misteriosa e potete partecipare unendovi al gruppo KAL from Italy su Ravelry. Non sto a dirvi il mio livello di curiosità al momento, visto che domani dovrebbe uscire il quarto indizio e potrò quindi andare avanti con il lavoro. Per questo scialle ho scelto la Malabrigo Sock nel favoloso colore Ravelry Red, un rosso che mi piace da impazzire e che credo utilizzerò di nuovo per altri progetti. It 's the first time I participate to a KAL and on top of that I ended up taking part to a Mystery one: the designer is Emma Fassio, the pattern is precisely called The Mysterious Woman and you can participate by joining the Ravelry’s group KAL from Italy. I will not tell you my level of curiosity at the moment, because tomorrow should be out the fourth clue and I can then go on with the knitting. For this shawl I chose a skein of Malabrigo Sock in the fabulous color Ravelry Red, a red that I love and that I will use for sure again in other projects. Here is the photo of the mysterious woman arrived to the third clue. 

Mare Nero

Avevo freddo e mi sono fatta velocemente un cappello.

Enso

Mi sono invaghita di Enso la prima volta che l’ho visto. Sono rimasta immediatamente colpita dalla sua forma, sagomata come il collo del vestito di Biancaneve, dalla sua costruzione ideata da designers geniali, e dalla sua versatilità, visto che è possibile portare il capo sia come un gilet che come un collo.

Come resistere quindi? Impossibile. Perciò ho comprato il pattern di Olga e 11 gomitoli di New Jersey della Sesia in un blu davvero elettrizzante, un colore solido, con un tocco di viola dentro, che sembra vada pure di moda quest’inverno (o almeno ne ho visto vetrine e negozi tappezzati) e ho iniziato a sferruzzare.

Enso è semplice da confezionare, anche se l’idea che giace dietro al modello è davvero creativa e intelligente. Si tratta di due cerchi realizzati con la tecnica dei ferri accorciati, uniti poi con una cucitura e allacciati insieme da un i-cord, il tutto seguendo il ritmo di un facile motivo a righe. Ho seguito passo passo le istruzioni, ma alla fine ho deciso di usare due bottoni in tinta invece dell’i-cord. E questa è la mia versione di Enso!

I have fallen in love with Enso the first time I saw him. I was immediately stuck by its form, shaped like the neck of Snow White’s dress, its construction created by brilliant designers, and its versatility, as you can wear it like a vest or like a  cowl.

How can you resist to such a beauty? You cannot. So I bought Olga’s pattern and 11 balls of New Jersey by Sesia, in a very electric blue, a solid color, with a touch of purple in it, which seems to be really cool this winter (or at least I have seen shops and shops windows covered with this color) and started knitting.
Enso is easy to knit, although the idea that lies behind the pattern is very creative and intelligent. It is done ​​sewing together two circles made with short rows and then closed up with an i-cord, following the rhythm of a simple striped pattern. I followed the instructions step by step, but in the end I decided to use two buttons instead of the i-cord. And this is my version!

Castagna - Chestnut

Ormai siamo in autunno inoltrato e i suoi colori spuntano da ogni parte: nel bosco con le foglie colorate di giallo, rosso e marrone, in tavola con zucche e castagne, in casa con i primi fuochi accesi. E io mi sono lasciata contagiare, scegliendo per il mio nuovo cardigan un ruvidissimo (e puzzolentissimo) filato in una calda tonalità marrone.

Questa volta ho improvvisato, partendo dal collo, lavorato a punto pavone così come i bordi e la banda dei bottoni. Ho poi proseguito con i raglan e giù lungo il busto e le maniche, tutti a maglia rasata diritta. L’apertura è spostata leggermente verso sinistra a creare una piacevole asimmetria. Infine, per le asole ho sfruttato i buchini del motivo invece di crearne di nuovi e l’effetto leggermente arricciato che ne è venuto fuori mi piace parecchio. I bottoni sono il mio fiore all’occhiello: rivestiti con un sottilissimo cordoncino e della stessa sfumatura del filo.

Lo Chanzer Trachenwolle della Gründl (100 gr = 190 m, 100% lana, colore 123), è rustico, ideale per chi ama i maglioni in perfetto stile “montanaro”, un po’ meno adatto invece a chi soffre di prurito! Comunque sia mi è piaciuta molto la sua consistenza che mi ha permesso di avere un punto pavone davvero ben definito, da primo piano. Unica pecca, l’odore persistente di pecora che spero se ne vada con i prossimi lavaggi e con  tutti i profuma biancheria con i quali ho imbottito il cardigan!

It is now late autumn and its colors are everywhere: in the wood with the leaves colored in yellow, red and brown, on the table with pumpkins and chestnuts, at home with the first fireplaces burning. And I have been affected, choosing for my new cardigan a very rough (and smelly too) yarn in a warm brown shade.
This time I improvised, starting from the neck, worked in peacock stitch like the edges and the button band. I then continued with raglans and down along the torso and sleeves, all in stockinette stitch. The opening is slightly shifted to the left to create a pleasing asymmetry. Finally, for the button holes I used the holes in the motif instead of creating new ones and I really like the vaguely curled effect that came out. Buttons are my pride and joy: coated with a thin cord and in the very same shade of the yarn.

Chanzer Trachenwolle of Gründl (100 g = 190 m, 100% wool, color 123) is rustic, ideal for those who love sweaters in a perfect "mountaineer" style, but not for who suffers from itching! Anyway I really liked its consistency that has allowed me to have a peacock stitch very well defined. The only flaw, the lingering smell of sheep that I hope will go away with the next washings and with all the perfumes I used to fill the cardigan!

Ho avuto un’idea e ho deciso di metterla in pratica, anche se probabilmente sconvolgerà un po’ i miei piani e mi farà fare le ore piccole (ormai sapete quanto mi piace fare la maglia e perdere tempo alla ricerca dei modelli “giusti”!).

Eccola qui: eseguire almeno un capo per ognuna delle tecniche che mi sono venute in mente e che secondo me meritano di essere approfondite. Alcune le ho già provate, altre sono per me del tutto nuove, quindi accetto più che volentieri consigli e dritte, ma anche, ovviamente, critiche (cercate però di non essere troppo cattivi!).

Questo è l’elenco, che a lungo andare subirà per certo modifiche e aggiornamenti.

I had an idea and I decided to put it into practice, although probably it will change my plans and let me stay up until late (you should know by now how much I like knitting and how many hours I spend looking for the right patterns!).

Here it is: realize at least one item for each of the techniques that came to my mind and that I think deserve to be studied a little more. I have already tried some of them, but others are completely new to me, so I am more than willing to accept any tips and tricks, but also, of course, critics (but try not to be too bad!).

This is the list, which will suffer for sure changes and updates.
