Non so se iniziare questo post parlandovi della geniale Olga o del favoloso filato ‘Starry’ della Dream in Color.

Appena ho visto il pattern Hari me ne sono follemente innamorata: versatile (puo’ infatti trasformarsi in sciarpa, in collo, in coprispalle o in stola), non troppo elaborato (e quindi facile da sferruzzare) e con un effetto tridimensionale davvero stupefacente (e’ la prima volta che dai miei ferri esce qualcosa del genere!).

Le creste formate dall’alternarsi di maglie accavvallate a destra e a sinistra e dai gettati si susseguono e movimentano il semplice motivo lace che si ripete per tutta la lunghezza del lavoro. L’idea di Olga di cucire dei piccoli ganci alle estremita’ in modo da chiudere la sciarpa a formare un collo o un coprispalle e’ poi davvero originale e permette di personalizzare e variare il proprio stile in un batter d’occhio.

E ora il filato. Starry (98% Merino Australiana e 2% filamenti metallici, 113 gr = 411 mt) si e’ rivelato perfetto per questo lavoro: un colore elegante, il Cocoa Kiss, impreziosito da tanti filini argentati. Un filato che esalta al 100% la dinamicita’ del pattern grazie alla sua ‘alta definizione’. Ho usato un intera matassa e ho continuato a sferruzzare finche’ questa meraviglia non e’ finita. 

Accoppiata vincente.

I don’t know where to start this post, if talking about the ingenious Olga or of the fabulous yarn  'Starry' by Dream in Color.

 

As soon as I saw the pattern Hari I fell madly in love with it: versatile (in fact it can become a scarf, a cowl, a shawl or a stole), not too elaborate (and easy to knit) and knitted with an outstanding three-dimensional effect (this is the first time that something like that comes out from my needles!).

  

The ridges formed by the alternation of the slipped stitches on the left and on the right and of the  yarns over enliven the simple lace pattern that is repeated along the length of the work. Olga's idea to sew the small hooks and eyes on the edges in order to end the scarf to form a cowl or a shrug is original and then really lets you customize and alter your style in the blink of an eye.

And now the yarn. Starry (98% Australian Merino and 2% metallic filaments, 113 g = 411 meters) is perfect for this job: a stylish color, the Cocoa Kiss, enriched by many silver filaments. A yarn which enhances the pattern dynamic due to its high definition. I used a whole skein and I continued to knit until it is finished.

Prima di tutto Buon Anno!!! Per le feste di Natale mi sono concessa una breve pausa dai ferri, ma oggi mi sono subito rimessa all'opera e ho sferruzzato questo Dusty (il pattern lo potete trovare nella colonna qui a destra) usando il Mist della Patons (gia' usato per lo scialle 'Nebbia').

Ho seguito le istruzioni passo passo, usando i ferri da 4,5 e 7 mm e poco meno di un gomitolo di filato.

Questo e' il risultato!

 

First of all...Happy New Year! I had a rest from my knitting stuff during the Xmas holidays, but today I used again my needles and I finished another Dusty (you can find the pattern in the column on the right side of the blog), using Mist by Patons (already used for the 'Nebbia-Mist" shawl).

I followed the instructions using 4,5 and 7 mm needles and almost a whole ball of yarn.

This is it!

Il mio Natale e' iniziato cosi'...con una telefonata alla mia sorella che abita a Parigi...

 Poi io e Manny abbiamo pensato agli addobbi natalizi (questo e' il nostro bushalbero di Natale!)...

 Then Manny and I put on our Xmas tree and some candles (this is our bush-xmas-tree!)...

 ...e Dario al pranzo (ovviamente lo abbiamo aiutato!)...

 ...while Dario was cooking the lunch (obviously we helped him!)...

 ...Agnello arrosto...

 ...roasted lamb...

 ...con patate e peperoni...

...with roasted potatos and capsicum...

 ...focaccine al rosmarino (non sono lievitate, altrimenti era pane!)...

 ...rosemary focaccia (she'd be bread but the yeasts didn't work!)...

Dall’Italia mi sono portata solo il mio adorato kit di ferri circolari Knit Pro e quindi appena ho messo piede qui, in Australia, mi sono dovuta rifornire di fili. Ho fatto un acquisto su Yay for yarn!, un negozio on line australiano molto carino. Tra i filati acquistati c’e’ anche il Ranco Multi della Auracania Yarns.

Questo filato e’ prodotto usando lana di agnelli allevati in Patagonia, poi filata e tinta a mano da un gruppo di artigiani di Santiago, Cile che fanno appunto parte della Auracania Yarns. Ranco (e’ il nome di un lago nel sud del Cile) Multi e’ un filato perfetto per realizzare scialli e colli perche’ e’ morbido e allo stesso tempo definisce bene i motivi lace come quello che ho usato io. Per sferruzzare questo scialle e’ stata sufficente una matassa (100 gr = 344 mt, 75% lana e 25% poliammide, colore 302), con un minimo avanzo di 19 gr (vedi il post “Intrecciami”). Ho poi impreziosito il lavoro aggiungendo perline rotonde tono su tono a ogni angolo, rendendo lo scialle piu’ sofisticato ed elegante.

From Italy I brought with me just my circular needles kit by Knit Pro and as soon as I set foot in Australia I bought some skeins of yarn. I shopped at Yay of yarn, a lovely Australian online shop and Ranco Multi by Auracania Yarns was in my chart!

This yarn is produced using a fine wool of lambs raised in south Patagonia Region and hand-dyed in Santiago, Chile, by a group of artisans, Auracania Yarns. Ranco (it is the name of a lake located in the South of Chile) Multi is perfect to knit shawls and scarves because is soft enough and at the same time it defines very well  lacy pattern as the one I used. To knit my shawl I used one skein (100 gr = 344 mt, 75% wool and 25% polyamide, colour 302), with a leftover of 19 gr (see post “Intrecciami”). Then I added few rounded beads on every edge, beautifying the shawl and making it more sophisticated and elegant.

Olga Buraya-Kefelian

Stavo fecendo un giro su Ravelry e tra i pattern appena pubblicati ho trovato questo. Una specie di traccia adebita a collana o a bracciale, fatta da due strisce forate e poi intrecciate insieme.

Potete seguire Olga sul suo blog, qui. Visitandolo ho subito capito chi era, conosco i suoi lavori pubblicati nei suoi libri o su riviste come Interweave Knits, belli e interessanti.

Insomma, questo per dirvi che... mi sono subito messa a lavoro!

I was surfing in Ravelry and in the newly published patterns I found this one. A kind of cable to wear like necklace or bracelet, made by two holed strips intertwined together.

You can find Olga in her blog, here. 

Watching it I immediately understood who she is, I know her patterns published in her books or in magazines like Interweave Knits, beautiful and interesting.

So, all this monologue to tell you that....I have already begun my cable!

Phengaris Alcon

Non e’ una farfalla, ma un scialle che per il colore e per la lavorazione ricorda la Phengaris Alcon.

Scialli, scialli, scialli! 

Questa volta la scelta e’ caduta sul Colonnade Shawl di Stephen West. Il pattern lo potete trovare su Knitty Fall 2009.

Per realizzarlo ho accoppiato due filati eccezionali: Piura di Filitaly-Lab (50 gr = 400 mt, 65% baby alpaca, 10% merinos, 25 % poliammide, colore 845),  e Merino 2 ply della Touch Yarns (100 gr = 900 mt, 100% merino, colore 275), acquistato in Nuova Zelanda lo scorso Giugno. Il Piura l’ho gia’ usato nella variante “lampone” per il Mea Shawl, il Merino 2 ply e’ invece una ‘new entry’ (anche se e’ assai simile al Mohair-Merino 2 ply, sempre della Touch Yarns, che ho gia’ usato per altri lavori). I colori dei due filati sono nati per stare insieme: il blu polveroso del Piura si accosta perfettamente ai blu e ai grigi del Merino, creando un bellissimo effetto ’nuvola variegata’.

Due parole sul Colonnade. Il risultato mi piace molto (nonostante il visibile errore..ooops!), ma mi sono incatricchiata spesso con le ripetizioni e piu’ volte ho dovuto controllare l’andamento del lavoro, cosa che invece non mi capita spesso. Staro’ perdendo colpi... Comunque e’ un modello molto carino, facile da portare, un accessorio adatto a qualsiasi capo.

Shawls, shawls and more shawls!

This time the choice has been Colonnade Shawl by Stephen West. You can find the pattern on Knitty, Fall 2009.

To knit it I matched two fabulous yarns: Piura by Filitaly-Lab (50 gr = 400 mt, 65% baby alpaca, 10% merinos and 25 % polyamide, colour 845) and Merino 2 ply by Touch Yarns (100gr = 900 mt, 100% merino, colour 275), bought in June in New Zealand. I have already used Piura in the ‘raspberry’ colour variation to knit the Mea Shawl, but Merino 2 ply is a ‘new entry’ (even if I have already used a very similar yarn for other projects, Mohair-Merino 2 ply by Touch Yarns as well). The colours of those two yarns are born to be knitted together: the dusty blue of Piura match perfectly with the blues and the greys of the Merino, creating a beautiful ‘variegated cloud’ effect.

Few words about Colonnade. I really like the result (despite the visible error...oooops!), but I had some troubles with the repetitions, I often had to check the progress of the work, which I don’t usually do. Probably I’m getting old... Anyway the pattern is really nice, it is an easy-wear accessory that can match with every apparel you have in your wardrobe.
