2012 WW Mystery Hat KAL

Non ho mai partecipato a un KAL di Woolly Wormhead, ma quest'anno voglio farlo, a dispetto dei 30 gradi che ci sono qui. Direi che non ho proprio bisogno di un cappello, ma come poter resistere ai deliziosi pattern di WW?! Ora devo solo decidere quale filato usare! E voi che fate, vi aggregate?

I've never participated to a Woolly Wormhead's KAL, bit this year I want to do it, even if outside there are 30 degrees. I'm sure I don't need a hat, but how can I resist the lovely WW's patterns? Now I just need to find the right yarn! And are you gonna join the KAL?

Per questo cappello ho preso palesemente ispirazione da Norby, pubblicato nella raccolta Wool People Book 2 da Brooklyn Tweed, che mi è piaciuto appena l'ho visto. Adoro le sue nappine!

Ho usato un filato che mi piace molto: l'Ecologico Camel (85% lana+15%cammello, 50 gr = 80 m) della Schchenmayer Nomotta, in due bellissimi toni di grigio e marrone, perfetti per la stagione invernale.

For this hat I clearly took inspiration from Norby, published in the collection Wool People Book 2 by Brooklyn Tweed, which I liked since I saw it. I love its tassels!
I used a yarn that I love: Ecological Camel (85% wool + 15% camel, 50 g = 80 m) by Schchenmayer Nomotta, in two beautiful shades of gray and brown, perfect for the winter season.

Varmer Hoved (Scalda Testa)

Come vi ho detto ho iniziato gli “scaldastivali” di Nancy Marchant e così ho pensato di dilettarmi un po’ con il punto brioche facendo questo cappellino. E questo punto mi piace, mi piace, mi piace! In questo “esercizio” ho testato le diminuzioni e mi sembra che l’effetto finale sia buono. Che ve ne pare?

As I already told you, I begun the “bootwarmers” by Nancy Marchant so I thought to play a little with brioche stitch knitting this hat. I love, really love, this kind of stitch! In this “exercise” I tested decreases and I think that the final effect is pretty good. What do you reckon?

Knitty Winter bis 2011

Oggi è uscita la nuova collezione di Knitty con stupendi pattern invernali. 

Al momento sono super impegnata a finire maglioni per metà della mia famiglia e accessori vari per l'altra metà (e ovviamente tutti hanno fretta di metterseli!), ma non mancherò di iniziare appena ho 5 minuti liberi i miei nuovi amori:

Ho deciso di partecipare alla splendida iniziativa organizzata da Cuore di Maglia tramite il gruppo Kal from Italy su Ravelry: si tratta della realizzazione di cappelli da Peter Pan che l'omonima Associazione distribuirà poi ai bambini per le feste di Natale.

I decided to participate to the splendid initiative organized by Cuore di Maglia and the Ravelry group Kal from Italy: it is the realization of Peter Pan hats that the homonymic Association will then distribute to children for Christmas.

Snail | Chiocciola

E’ la prima volta che eseguo un pattern di Elizabeth Zimmermann. Già il suo nome dice tutto e credo che ormai di lei si sappiano vita, morte e miracoli (e se non li sapete potete sempre consultare il sito Schoolhouse Press e i suoi manuali – da avere – come Knitting around, Knitting Workshop, Knitting without Tears e via dicendo). Quindi non sto a dirvi nulla di questo genio della maglia visto che potete trovare sue informazioni più o meno ovunque, sia su libri e riviste che on line.

Parlo di un berretto e della mia prima volta a tu per tu con un suo modello, lo Snail Spiral Hat.

Devo dire che, nonostante sia stato scritto nei lontani anni settanta, è strabiliante quanto ancora sia attuale e moderno questo modello, anche se credo che le lane tra le quali possiamo scegliere oggi possano certamente dare un tocco in più in quanto ad originalità e attualità.

Trovo inoltre molto interessante la stesura della spiegazione, sicuramente diversa da quelle che siamo abituate a leggere, ricca com’è di suggerimenti e spiegata in un modo così chiaro e semplice che anche chi non pratica troppo assiduamente la maglia potrebbe capire.

Felice quindi di aver finalmente scelto un modello di Elizabeth che mi piace e che trovo adatto a me, ho trovato nel mio armadio un filato bulky (Ragazza Lei della Lana Grossa, 100% lana, 50 gr = 39 m, già usato per Bottiglia) e seguendo passo passo le istruzioni ho finito nel giro di pochissime ore la mia Chiocciola. L’effetto finale lo trovo un po’ da elfo, tuttavia mi piace molto e se non altro ha la forma un po’ diversa dalle solite che sono abituata a fare. 

It is the first time I knit a pattern by Elizabeth Zimmermann. Her name should tell you already everything about her and her knitting techniques and I think that we already know life, death and miracles of this famous lady (and if you don’t know them, you can still have a look to the Schoolhouse Press website and her manuals – a must have – like Knitting Around, Knitting Workshop, Knitting without Tears and so on). So I’m not going to write anything about this knitting genius as you can easily find  information everywhere, on books, magazines and on line.

I will talk about of a beret and my first time face to face with an Elizabeth Zimmermann’s pattern: the Snail Spiral Hat.

I have to say that, even if the pattern has been written back in the Seventies, it is amazing how modern and actual is, but I also think that the big choice of different wools we have today makes the different and that a determinate and more particular yarn gives a more stylish and original sparkle to the pattern.

I also find interesting the way the instructions are written, for sure very different from the ones we are used to read today, rich in details and suggestions, so easy and simple that even if you don’t practice knitting every day you can understand.

Happy to have finally found a pattern by Elizabeth that I like and I think it suits me, I chose a bulky yarn (a leftover of Ragazza Lei by Lana Grossa, 100% wool, 50 gr = 39 m, already used here) and following the instructions, I finished my Snail in just a couple of hours. It look like a elf hat, but I really like it and by the way it has at least an unusual shape.

Meret

Stavo curiosando su Ravelry nella sezione “cappelli” e tra i primi in classifica è apparso il Meret (Mistery Beret) di Wolly Wormhead con più di 4000 berretti già realizzati dalle knitters di tutto il mondo. Di Wolly potete trovare una bella intervista su Yards ofYarn e potete anche dare un’occhiata al suo sito, dove non avrete che l’imbarazzo della scelta tra tantissimi (e tutti favolosi) modelli di cappelli, sia per grandi che per piccini. Potete trovare anche un gruppo dedicato ai lei e ai suoi cappelli su Ravelry, Wormhead's Hats, dove al momento è in corso il Mystery KAL 2011.

Insomma, conscia della celebrità di Wolly Wormhead e dei suoi cappelli, mi sono messa all’opera e ho tirato fuori la mia versione del Meret. Come filato ho scelto la New Jersey della Sesia in un fantastico color petrolio acceso e devo dire che più lavoro questo filato e più mi piace, sia per la sua composizione di 100% merino irrestringibile, sia per la sua resa e per la buona definizione dei punti che se ne ottiene. E poi Sesia è una delle poche buone ditte di filati italiane, quindi un motivo in più di per usare i suoi prodotti.

Potete scaricare gratis le istruzioni per il Meret direttamente dal sito di Wolly Wormhead e se volete un berretto che vi calzi a pennello, che sia di moda e che venga invidiato da tutti, vi consiglio sinceramente di farlo!

I was browsing in the Ravelry hat section and in the one of the first positions of the classify I found Meret (Mistery Beret) by Wolly Wormhead, with more than 4000 berets already done by the knitters of all around the world. About Wolly you can find a wonderful interview on Yards of Yarn and you can have a look at her site too, where you can chose from numerous (and all fabulous) hats, for both adults and kids. You can find even a Ravelry group dedicated to Wolly and her hats, Wormhead's Hat, where at the moment is in progress the Mystery KAL 2011.

So, conscious of the fame of Wolly and her hats, I began the work and I knitted my Meret. Like yarn I chose New Jersey by Sesia in a wonderful bright teal color and I have to say that the more I knit with it, the more I like it: I love its 100% merino super wash composition and its good stitch definition. On top of that, Sesia is one of the few good Italian yarn producers, another good reason to use its yarns.

You can download the Meret pattern directly from Wolly Wormhead website and if you want a stylish beret that fits you perfectly, I highly recommend you to knit it immediately!
